Given Roberto has discovered plan b lately I would be happy for Milner to play a role in managing games where we might be one up and needing to hold on. It's unfortunate that he has been injured and also surprising given his good fitness record previously. It also appears Roberto wants him so why not.

Our recruitment policy is based upon signing talent young and relatively cheap, developing and then selling that talent on for big bucks. Those players stand a better chance of developing into top talent if they have not just any old heads but THE most experienced, winning players to guide them. They do not come more experienced than Milner.

If Milner gives the likes of Hinshelwood, Gilmour, Buonanotte, Enciso, Barco that helping hand then his £2.5 mill in wages will be a drop in the ocean if he helps develop another £100 million of talent. We can't afford to buy gamechangers, we have to develop them and part of development is knowing how to act and prepare like a pro.

Clearly, De Zerbi is placing a value on what Milner brings to the squad. If you want to see what a talented squad without wise guidance is like then look no further than the Chelsea side of recent 2 seasons. Cole Palmer is papering over the cracks there, they are light years away from City and Arsenal.

I agree that Milner has to be able to perform, but I still think if he can get fit he could give us useful service off the bench in 2024/25.

I look forward to seeing how things pan out.
Hinshelwood gave an interview earlier in the season where he said it was privilege working alongside and learning off of Milner. I think Hinshelwood is such an exciting prospect for us, I'm delighted he's learning off of Milner. (I say prospect, Hinshelwood already looks a good established first team player, "prospect" is used in the sense that he could become an amazing talent for us.)

I'm not saying Hinshelwood isn't learning off Milner, but people need to understand how these soundbytes are generated. The question is usually along the line of are you learning off Milner - what do you expect people to answer?

Question.

Is this the most overwhelmingly negative reaction there has ever been to a Brighton signing / resigning?

Has there been anyone with such a large fan base constituency strongly against bringing in or retaining a player?

He's definitely been learning from Milner and Lallana this season. Unfortunately, mostly it's what's good to watch on Netflix, while you're recovering from injury and how to cheat at Uno.

I actually think will Lallana going, it makes sense to keep Milner. I think providing he is kept away from the fullback role he clearly can't handle anymore, then he will be good in games where we need to see out a lead for the last 15-20 minutes.

Didn’t Milner when asked on the US pre season tour identify Hinshelwood as the player with most potential? If Milner adds £1m to AH’s (oops I meant JH) value (by mentoring him) then it must be worth it

Interviewer: "Is it a privilege working alongside and learning off of Milner?"

Hinshelwood (glances sideways at media handler, who nods): "Yes"

That is a very fair point. But I do think, for young players with genuine talent, to be able to train with professional of the caliber of Milner, Lallana, Welbeck, Veltman, is such clever thinking by the club. The young players can be told how to behave and how to train until the coaches are blue in the face. But having older professionals of that level around the first team, gives them an example to follow. They can see what those guys do, and emulate it. And regardless of the soundbites, its worth having them onboard for that alone.

You think paying Milner £2.5m, in order to have him (tenuously) add £1m to Hinshelwood's value, 'must be worth it'?

I wouldn't bother applying for The Apprentice just yet!

Looks like you have deliberately missed the point I was making, and then added a touch of sarcasm. Oh well!

You seem to be fully aware of Milner’s contract. Please share (actually please don’t).

I think I would have to say Dean Hammond at the beginning of the AMEX era, even more so when you consider Naylors tease, where everyone thought it was Bobby Zamora re-signing.

But there certainly haven't been many met with such "meh"ness.
