Did I hear right in that someone on the phone in yesterday wanted us to ship him out, because they felt he wasn't up to it? We should start a list for moronic comments and add that one for starters.
I think I know who made the comment and can't quite believe it came from those lips!!!

For God's sake he's only 17!!! What are people expecting from him? Personally I think he's shown up really well so far and McGhee is playing him perfectly.

Getting rid of him would be stupid, even if it were on loan somewhere as I reckon it would knock his confidence unnecessarily.

i agree on some cases. loaning a player always seems to be an indication from my view that they are not wanted...but in this case i think jake knows how much albion value him and at 17 loaning would be valuable....but who would we loan him to? a 3rd division side would just punt it in the air to him which would be pointless. and no higher team ewould loan him realistically. i say keep him here and keep on doing what hes doing

:clap2: good man management by mcghee, well thats what i feel anyway

Hear! Hear! He is skillful & talented. His work rate is excellent as is his movement off the ball. His one problem is that being small and somewhat lightweight he is too easily knocked off the ball but that will improve with age and experience. Get rid of talent like him? Some people have no sense!

We can hardly expect Jake to show his best when all we do is lump high balls to him. The same goes for Leon Knight. They need the ball played to their feet but sadly we have too many players in the team at the moment who are not very comfortable on the ball and tend to hoof it as soon as they get it without, in many cases, even looking up.

As for sending Jake out on loan, I also thought the caller in question was barking up the wrong tree. For god's sake give the lad a chance. Does anyone really think that even Michael Owen would have done much for us yesterday up front with Leon?

I think Jake should be on the bench for Knight and brought on part of the way through the game when Knight has been knocked around too much by the defence.

That way Knight would know he was free to run around a lot more because he wouldn't have to pace himself over the whole 90 mins and they can both go on runs dodging and weaving (some of which we did see yesterday)

That's just for the moment. Jake will come into his own when he has finished growing.

The last thing we need to do is loan him out for 3rd division carthorses to kick around the pitch. We have a small group of rising stars: Harding, Robinson, El-Abd and Virgo and we need to bring them on carefully, keeping them close to home so that, hopefully they develop an affinity with the club.

If there was a man of the match award for the last 25 minutes, I give it to Jake yesterday, he never stopped running, looks good on the ball and when his physique improves we will have a great player on our hands.

If all players gave it as much effort as him we'd be cruising (not to mention knackered!!). Even Leon started running after seemingly lost causes, seeing the example set by Jake.

Jakey is excellent at losing his marker and getting into space. If only the other players in the team could spot it.

He did it on his debut at Middlesbrough.

my man of the match at grimsby. at such a young age that was immense of him.
our sunday league team has a player that is 16 and only looks 13 and because of this he looks shite and doesn't play much but give him a couple of years and a bit of growing up and he will make a good player. so imagine what it is like for jake straight from school football into pro football with big blokes like butters and other athletic, strong types. every game is a daunting task for him and to get votes for man of matches and not look totally lost at his age means the boy has immense talent just hope he does not lose that never say die attitude.

He has the courage of a lion. Brentford players were knocking 7 bells out of him and he still ran at them.
I would say he's not daunted at all.
Their keeper got a red card for what he did to him.

As Buckingham said, Leon's workrate improves when he sees Jakey.

That caller has not a got a clue I thought it did alright yesterday not every one is going to do a Rooney. The fact he has broken throught into the first team says a lot.

Have been impressed until yesterday when he was pretty poor. I'm sure he'll bounce back.

When Jake came on yesterday I felt straight away that this wasn't the right match for him. We were trying to hang on to a 1-1 draw against a well organised and physical side - MM naturally was hoping Jake could get a winner - and he nearly did. If we can just be patient and let him grow - without him having too many lumps kicked out of him - I'm sure we'll have a very good young player on our books.

I first saw Jake play when he was about 10 and even then he had a certain something about him.His development has been carefully handled and he is maturing into a quality player. He is keen to stay with the Albion, but if we start loaning him out he might feel he is not wanted and start looking for another club.Let's just have a bit of patience and allow MM to use Jake as he sees fit.As stated by other posters we must start giving him the ball to his feet-then we'll see what he can do.

Football is a hard game. I think he needs time to develop. Great attitude and potential but don't burn the kid out.
Virgo is a great man and will be a premiership class central defender within two years.

He did not have a good game on Saturday, but our tactics were woeful. Other players should be putting balls to feet down the channels rather than aimless hoofing in the air that was meat and drink to the Vale defenders.

Having said that, he and Leon did not seem to be on the same wavelength.

Wayne Rooney had scored goals in the Premiership and was in the full England squad by the time he was 17. Leon is only Jake's size but has enough pace and presence to compete. Whether Jake will grow that much or develop enough presence remains to be seen. In the meantime why bring him on as a sub when the boss keeps saying that Leon needs a target man to play with. Chris McPhee should be on the bench!

Well I am able to admit it was me, and I think perhaps I didn't explain myself very well. I would dearly love to have a home grown talent who sets the team alight, I don't think it's going to be him at the moment.

If it was going to be him he would be scoring by now, and commanding a place in the starting line up.

The loan thing was lambasted by you, and I can see why, but how else is he going to get that experience? Lumping it and running the the third is not a lot different from what we are doing at the moment, and if he could do a job for someone there, then he would come back to us with a goal scoring record. Then he would have something to prove to us.

I don't see any point in worrying about putting him under pressure, that's the nature of life Jake, we're all under some sort of pressure if we want to be successful, and he shouldn't be afraid of getting a bit of that.

17 or not, Michael Owen was in the Liverpool team at that age, becuase he was recognised as a talent, and put into the shop window, then at 18 he was England centre forward. If Jake is any good he ain't going to get anywhere coming on for 10 mins at the end of a game, and not scoring any goals.

If it means more time in the reserves I'm not sure that will do it. If it's going to be in the first team then he has to start scoring, or at least making the keeper work, that's what strikers are for.

Please don't get me wrong, or take these comments negativly, I want him to succeed, wrapping him in cotton wool won't help.

In at the deep end, start up front with Leon, and score goals. That'll do it, that'll keep us in the hunt.

I didnt hear the phone in and have 'skimmed' the usual shite on here..
I reckon Phil might have a point. Might. I think Man Utd had a decent young player and Fergie sent him out on loan to another club in order to gain 'vital first team experience'. Cant remember his name but I think I saw his debut and he now plays for a two bob team in Madrid.
Getting him out on loan might not be the answer. However, 10 minutes here and there I believe certainly wont be. I do think he has done very well to have played the games he has so far. He might turn into a great player for us/ he might not. Watching his touch and movement I think he has an awful lot going for him and will at some stage deliver the goods. Just because we might send him out on loan does not mean we dont love him or he is no good, it might just aid his development. Ask any player and they will tell you you get 10 times more out of a any first team game than a reserve game.

I would love him to stay and continue to score goals for us but he may well improve if he had 2 months at another club. Who knows, 6 games of having 7 bells knocked out of him might just beef him up!
