... for suggesting Muslim women should remove their veils.

Hs should be SACKED and de-selected IMMEDIATELY

This TOTALLY flies in the face of the age-old parliamentary tradition of Right Honourable Members suggesting women should remove their knickers

I think if he expects them to remove their veils he should remove his pants.

If Jack Straw is going to remove his pants I'm going to start wearing a veil

That people start debating (polititions included) whether or not a Muslim woman should lift up her veil when she speaks to you and not talking about things that actually matter.
I did laugh though ......................... he really is a twat.

Seems that there is now a ''Muslim Story'' just about every day now on the news or in the paper.
We had 2 today...................................

Tomorrows Sun will no doubt have em emailing in in their tens of thousands.

Agreed.

A parrallel with the way anti-semetic feelings in the press started in 1930s Germany?

The most sensible and un-extreme bloke I saw interviewed for the news, was a bearded darker-skinned fellow who said that what he said wasn't bad, because it was a request and not a demand, so it was actually okay. That would be about right, but then it still begs the question as to why it needed to be requested at all, in a country that is inviting and should therefore be celebrating diversity?

It's a bit like surrounding yourself with several people from another country then getting paranoid that they are talking about you when you can't understand them. It is Straw's insecurity that worries me more than a Muslim's clothing of choice. It's too late and contentious to be going on about our deep-seated British culture and how people should come here and blend to something they don't have in their own cultures. You either embrace the changes or find a corner as far as possible away from them, in my opinion.

Mind you, it is a two-way street, as there shouldn't be groups of peoples here who refuse to interract outside of their own culture or race. In this, it seems the facially-covered women were open to hear or meet with Straw, but he has a problem with that! Why vilify or alienate those who HAVE come to discuss and integrate??

It's all just so bloody stupid, it's Straw who needs to 'get with the program' here!

Anyone realise this has been blown out of context - All that Jack Straw actually said was that he felt uncomfortable talking to muslim women who wear veils all the time and to be honest - who can blame him...This wasn't an inflammatory comment. If he said that he felt uncomfortable talking to paedophiles no one would have batted an eyelid, but everytime someone mentions anything that could be misconstrued about muslims, everyone is up in arms and many in the muslim community start saying they are being victimised.

He only wants to be able to see their faces when HE meets with them in HIS office, like most other western people he probably finds speaking to someone with their face covered a little off putting, I doubt that he could really give a shit what they wear the rest of the time (so long as its not a semtex vest)

I dont get it.
We want Britain to be multi cultural and diverse then we have our polititions saying dont do this if you are Muslim and dont wear that.

David Blunkett could give Straw some tips. People talk on the phone and over the radio and they manage ok. Dont think I want Straw as deputy leader if he has a problem with veils.

Ahem, muslims and paedos is hardly a comparison that bears up to scrutiny. Anyone should feel discomfort around paedos, and should not feel discomfort around muslims wearing traditional clothes.
We are open-house to cultural diversity, either we embrace everything legal that comes with it, or stop entirely. These women are coming to the table to meet with Straw, they are hardly the people he should be alienating with dumbass remarks!
