just watching the FHM highstreet honeys video for their cover of 'i touch myself' on FHM TV and i'm quite dissappointed. FHM, once, used to be a very good magazine and a really cool brand but now it's just another cog in the emap machine, as a brand it has no credability now.

made me think about the furore surrounding Loaded and FHM in the mid nineties and their perceived mysogynist output, but compared to Nuts or Zoo they were cultured.

it was such a shame that Jack was shelved, quality magazine that i'm sure would sell enough to justify the demands of a publisher. What happened to Jack? East London Seagull will know.

I only buy Viz and Four Four Two, there's f*ck all else out there these days - what does everybody else read?

I believe that it was selling just over 30,000 issues a month when it was shelved - that's why.

Magazine publishing is simple: if you don't sell, you get canned - no matter how good the mag might seem to be.

Maxim's the next mag that looks fragile by the way, it's just had terrible ABC results.

Still got all my old issues of Jack knocking round my flat.

Agree with you, it was a quality read. All the other mags keep going by relying on scantily clad ladies to sell copies.

Not that I have anything against scantily clad hussies. I'd like to though.

When Saturday Comes is the best football magazine by a country mile, and pisses on FourFourTwo (which may now as well be called Shoot Monthly) from a great height.

The only other mag I read is The Wisden Cricketer, which is superb, and occasionally NME.

Buy Sight and Sound occassionally but rely on papers in general for all my football and film news. All lads mags are shocking.

As for porn, who needs to purchase mags anymore.

I don't think there was anything mysoginistic about Loaded in its heyday whatsoever - quite the opposite: I think it played on the fact that girls quite liked boys being boys.

I think there was a big London/provinces gap there though: I suspect that the editorial team behind it were basically posh ponces having fun play acting at being lads, whereas much of its readership was thinking "hey, these people are acting like stupid yobs, just like me" - can't imagine too many of them got much out of the fantastic Hunter S Thompson interviews, say. Now it's just bad cheap porn for teenagers, of course.

I still think there's good mileage in the old-fashioned Playboy formula: tits AND real brain fodder, with lengthy intelligent interviews etc. The Playboy interviews with John Lennon, say, were definitive.
