What on earth would they need to 'thank him' for? For having a pretty crap shot, that got lucky?

That lad is absolutely wasting his career. Undoubtedly gifted, but if he can't hold down a place in a team 12th in the Championship, he's not going to come to much.

Thought Gus's comments were spot on and as said previously nice to hear him speak well of the club and fans. Jack Grealish is probably a mate of Lascelles hence the banter , I am not sure he would be Solly's type.

Going to upset people now - would you take Grealish and/or Pritchard if there were to come available , say 5 and 10 million respectvely ? Both have talent but could be disruptive? Both are capable of winning games by doing the unexpected.

Jack Grealish is one of those typical players with some talent, that only turn it on in spits and spurts.
Unlike Albion players who've been guided by a disciplined / grounded manager in CH, some of Villa's "talent" has gone array sometimes.
Just because you go to a big named club, doesn't make you anymore special than your counterpart in a lesser team.
I see Scott Hogan going to Villa from Brentford for £15 million as a dead end, as there's no guarantee that they'll get promoted in the near future.

The manager must be reflecting on his decision to cut the players a lot of slack after winning promotion. It sent out a message that it was job done and the players switched off. They chucked the title away, when it was in their hands, with three limp, lack lustre displays, that angered and frustrated fans, who just wanted to see the title won.
They aren't the only ones. Certain clubs have been switching off since reaching 40 points in the PL ( WBA and Watford to name two )
Wouldn't it have been good just to finish with momentum, convincing winners of the league and going into the PL with a real swagger. Sadly. promotion came too early and players jumped at the chance to take it easy and coast. Only the odd one or two stayed focussed and we learnt a lot about character in the last few games.

But personally, I'll always be grateful for what he did, even though it ended in tears.

Gus started the upward climb but without Russell Slade's miracle escape formula, we would have been starting from an even lower base. It is doubtful that Gus would have been attracted to a Div 2 club and it is almost certain that we would have started life at the Amex below Championship level.
Those few dramatic games and that amazing string of results, was what rescued this club from basement football and made Gus's job a lot easier from day one.

I don't dispute that at all. Russel Slade did stop the rot. My point was that it was Gus who started our upward momentum.

Russell Slade did rescue us in 2009, but when he was sacked in October of that year, we were back in the bottom three. Gus came in two weeks later getting us up to 11th in May 2010.
He got us to the Championship the very next season, as Champions. He also brought Calde, Greer and Bruno in.

Agreed but my point was, without Slade's miracle act at the end of the previous season, we would have been in Div.2 and there would, most likely, have been no Poyet. Had Slade failed to keep us up, he would still have been retained and may have enjoyed some success in the bottom tier. As stated, he had a poor start to 09/10 and paid the price, with a new owner eyeing higher profile managers.
