All of those 15 bets or instructions to bet were initiated by Mr Toney at a time when it would not have been public knowledge that he was starting or playing in the fixture. Given the guidelines give minimum penalties like this, it makes it more difficult to understand why it took so long to announce and activate the sanctions. I suggested in the other Toney thread that his guilty plea should have prompted an immediate announcement of a suspension of "minimum X duration". Knowing that the guidance they work to included minimums in it just makes me believe they should have done that even more. They knew already he was going to get a minimum 6 months, so he should have immediately been suspended for "a minimum 6 months plus an additional X months to be announced before the expiration of the initial 6 months".

Bloody Ada, I assumed it would be bets not involving his team. Presuming he played in those games, then you're absolutely right - 8 months feels very skinny for betting on something he could have directly influenced. That's in the realms of insider trading/criminal activity.

Yes, if he had played in those games a precedent has been set; 8 year ban and four months in prison! It quite possibly also meant missing out on a World Cup winner's medal for Peter Swan too.

It doesn’t take much to whisper in a team mate’s ear encouraging them to ‘miss’ or allow the ball to go out of play.
How did he know he wasn’t going to play, if the team sheet is only issued one hour before kick off? Has this been thoroughly investigated?

Absolutely dumbfounded that given the gravity of the offence it took so long to sort out. This is a very lenient sentence indeed. That said I hope he uses the time off to get the help he so clearly needs to rid him of this addiction.

Always head over heart when it comes to betting. Sometimes there has been ridiculous value in betting against the Albion - Fulham and Everton paid out nicely this season at 5/1 as did Sheffield United away a couple of years ago for the home win

I do think it’s a bit far fetched to suggest he could influence his team mates to lose. I imagine he performed all his betting in secret and with a certain amount of shame.

Over 200 offences? I’m not sure addicts (if that’s what he is) feel shame as they are so driven.

One of our younger players is self-banned from bookies across the City and was presumably sent out on loan to help him avoid them. Sadly, where he was sent to also has betting outlets and the internet is very real. It's a real problem in the game and more needs to be done. If you think about professional sportspeople, they are definitely prone to obsessive/addictive behaviour because you need to have those traits in order to be able to get to where they have in the game.

If it’s games he played in I can’t believe it’s only 8 months. Multiple full seasons seems a much better minimum to me but hope he gets some help and isn’t just back doing it soon.

I was in the car yesterday morning and listening to TS's coverage of the Albion game – very good and positive about us, TBH – and then Brentford fan Natalie Sawyer started talking about Toney (as part of a wider chat about them and Villa (Gabby Agboringlahor was co-hosting) fighting it out for Europe). She, naturally, thought it was too harsh, agreed with Southgate and felt sorry for him the fact that Toney wasn't able to train with the club. Then she caveated everything she said with "Of course, we don't know EXACTLY what he's been charged with..." or words to that effect.

I totally understand gambling addiction, it's horrible. But this pattern of betting, mainly in games he was involved in or in games his side had an interest in, smacks of greed not addiction.

Agree and so would I. If I was drug or alcohol tested by my employer I'd claim 'addiction' in mitigation.

The team sheet may be issued to the ref, the other team and the media an hour before the game but the players know the starting XI etc a day or two before the game. So he’d know he wasn’t going to be involved (barring late injury and being drafted into the squad) on the Thursday or Friday.

Yeah, I get that. It's always worth an insurance bet. Thinking about it, I did back against us getting promotion in 2017. I did it in the knowledge that if it didn't happen the following year's season ticket was paid for. It's making sure that the bet doesn't tip the balance in what I actually want as the outcome. My pay out would have been £750 but I still wanted the Albion to go up as if I hadn't taken it out. If I'd have gone much above that I would have been compromised.

I was so nervous in those last few weeks that I pumped £150 against us. It took away the nerves as and I saw it as an insurance policy against grief rather than a bet. Much of the bet came from freebies from matched betting.
