After their World Cup debacle their players have had to sign up to a code of contact that includes them having to sing the national anthem.

Absolutely spot on and what a surprise that pikey looking Carroll made no attempt to sing at all. He had better be good!

Was thinking the same about Carroll myself. He had a self confident air of someone who believes he's untouchable. Sing the anthem you c**t, or f*ck off...

Oh, and as usual England's play is turgid.

It was like watching the full Arsenal side play Lincoln City.

Guess who England were ?

Last night's inept performance reminds me of why I really don't give a toss about England or Premiership football.

Only watched the first half but France's passing was SUBLIME!

Having said that England were absolutely DIRE. No closing down when they had the ball, and when they did have the ball nobody came short it was just hoof hoof hoof. In all seriousness Albion pass the ball better than England at the moment.

Watched the first half then turned over for The Apprentice.

I had a little bet on France to win 2-1 though. I think that must be the first time I have ever bet against us but I won't lose any sleep over it.

Can't stand Capelllo or most of the team.

The French are taught the basics of football from a very early age, technically they are streets ahead of us. Anyone who thought their poor world cup was to do with them being shit like we were is deluding themselves.

It seems Capello has accepted that we play best when we play like Wimbledon of old, put a big battering ram forward in and hoof the ball to him is the way forward

If that was England playing "their best" then I dread to think how we'll play when we have an off day!

Why is singing the National Anthem so important?

for me it's because i want to see a bit of passion.

Superficial i know but it does convey a message when you see the players belting it out.

I recall one game, long ago, when the Anthem couldn't be played and Terry Butcher insisted the players sang it anyway, neck veins and eyes bulging out in an attempt to be heard.

but i'm guessing that most pro footballers couldn't remember that amount of words strung together anyway.

Funny how the ones that don't sing seem to be the moody ones who come across as a bit thicker than most though.

Neville, Rooney and now Carroll

Just watch the rugby union players and see their passion for the game in their singing of the national anthem rather than the embarrased mouthing of it by most of the England team. Might have something to do with why more and more people are turning to rugby for the nationalistic fix.

Although two or three Frenchies didn't sing it, so will presumably be fined?

Sense of balance on this thread please.

I only counted two England players not singing, one of which Caroll, who presumably coming from Newcastle can not read so does not know the words.

How can you possibly have a desire to excel in your chosen field, something you've dedicated your life to if you don't sing your national anthem? Chelsea and Man U failed to win their games at the weekend because the teams didn't sing a national anthem, it's what gives you passion and a desire to win. Really, with no anthems being sung each week, I'm surprised any player gees themselves up enough to win club matches.

Also, if you don't sing your national anthem, how can you possibly know how to kick a football?

What we need is Capello to instil some sort of set of rules that bring some discipline back into the side. Oh wait he did that, and we praised him for it, until the world cup, when we criticised him for it.

some players don't sing the national anthem? so what? I wouldn't. It's a f***ing dirge. Can't stand it.

Some people sound like Yanks with all this enforced patriotism.

If I read you right, you're equating a perceived lack of patriotism with stupidity.

Or is that not the point you're making?

No just an observation, more about the moodiness/attitude than the thickness tbh
