MLS Amerisoccer is back!

Well actually, it started up again on Thursday with Seattle playing LA and losing 1-0 in front 36,644. So with two expansion franchises, record crowds expected (and now rivalling Championship levels), who are you ROOTING for?

Runners and riders

Seattle Sounders - An astonishing 32,000 STHs more or less fill the lower half of the big stadium in Seattle, they have already won 2 pieces of silverware since joining MLS 2 years ago (both times, the US Open Cup, their FA Cup). Colombian Freddy Montero is their stand out player now that Freddie Lyungberg has moved to Chicago.

Colarado Rapids - surprise winners last year. They barely made the play offs, then came through like a train. Unlikely to win it again this season, but play offs are realistic.

NY RedBulls - MY team, and they have the BEST stadium in the league, holding 25,189 and now with 10,000 STHs. They also have Thierry Henry. And Rafa Marquez. NY have never won MLS Cup, but this season could well be different...

LA Galaxy - probably the most recognisable team in MLS with Beckham and Landon Donavan, in their usually full 27,000 all seater purpose built stadium. They now also have JP Angel on the ROSTER so they are ancient, but expect to feature at the business end of the season.

Vancouver Whitecaps - expansion franchise gets down to business with an opening day sold out Canada "derby" against TFC tomorrow. 16,500 STHs and a fervent support might make the temporary 23,000 all seater stadium look woefully inadequate, although they're moving into a new rebuild venue half way through the season.

Portland Timbers - the other expansion franchise. Coached by ex Chelsea John Spencer, have rebuilt their stadium and sold all 12,500 season tickets weeks ago. Arguably the most passionate fans in the league, but no decent players so expected to struggle.

Toronto FC - perrenial underachievers, which is wearing the patience of their 16,000 STHs very thin. Expect improvement this season though, under Dutchman, Aaron Winter. Playoffs (top 10) will be minimum expectation this time out after 3 shit seasons.

Philly Union - another team with a big supporter base (12,000 STH) now into their second MLS season. Didn't make the playoffs last season, but looked promising at times and have unearthed a diamond in French striker, Sebastian Le Toux.

DC United - the one time jewel in the MLS crown have fallen on hard times recently. Absolutely SUCKED last season, but glimmers of hope this time round with some good youngsters having come through.

Columbus Crew - another team in the doldrums. Site of the first soccer specific stadium in MLS, but now looks bare and tired, and on the pitch the team are in a rebuilding phase. Reaching the play-offs might be considered a major achievement.

Sporting Kansas City - rebranded this season (from KC Wizards), they move into their new stadium and have gone from a tiny fanbase of a few thousand to 10,000 STHs thanks to the stadium move (where else have we seen that?). Omar Bravo has just arrived there.

FC Dallas - a very handy team with woeful support in recent seasons. However becoming MLS Cup finalists last season has changed all that, so they cannot be ruled out as a contender. First game at Pizza Hut Park (lulz) this season is a 20,000 sell out, which is quite a turn around from last season.

Houston Dynamo - Two time winners don't look strong this year, but all the interest for them is about events off the field, where they look to break ground on a new covered 22,000 stadium for the next 18 months or so.

Chivas USA - shit team and LA Galaxy stadium squatters. Not much going for them really.

Chicago Fire - lovely stadium, a couple of decent players have arrived (and gone in the case of Guatemoc Blanco) and they are a team and club in optimistic mood - season tickets in 2011 number 5,000 which is highest in their history. A dark horse.

Real Salt Lake - winners in 2009, soccer recently became popular in Salt Lake and the team have taken off, with 8,000 STHs at last count. A real danger this season, although the loss of Robbie Findlay to Nottingham Forest will be a blow to their title hopes

NE Revolution - Steve Nicol still manages the team, but key players are getting old and it is a franchise in need of an injection of investment. People are tired of watching soccer at a 70,000 facility with 12,000 rattling around.

San Jose Earthquakes - play in the poorest facility in the league by a mile, seating 10,000. Their "star" player recently was Darren Huckerby, so a bit of a village outfit really. Not likely to challenge.

What's an expansion franchise, I don't get it!

Do you get any away supporters?

Are the San Hose Earthquakes the American equivalent of Scunthorpe?

Kansas new stadium looks quite smart. I like the roving webcam and the 3D tour is quite good as well.

KC Soccer Stadium Opening in Summer 2011

The mayor was recently 'bigging up' Las Vegas as a possible expansion franchise. I'd love to ba able to watch live football on a regular basis again, not so sure about playing in 110 degree temperatures though.

Seattle Sounders. Wardy played for an earlier incarnation and I've been there a few times. They've got a good set of 'ultras' the ECS (Emerald City Supporters) and they do seem to have sections set aside where the fans are allowed to STAND! (They have the same debates between the proper fans who stand and the boring wankers who sit that we do)

They don't have promotion and relegation but are expanding the league. However an owner with deep pockets and a proper stadium solution is required. Montreal will be team #19 next season (they will be expanding their stadium to hold 20,000 next season, and using the Olympic stadium next door for bigger league games) and team #20 is expected to be the rebirth of the NY Cosmos in 2013, although that is not confirmed.

Away supporters - yes and no. Big country = few travelling fans, but the away support culture has take a grip. The 3 Pacific North West teams (Seattle, Portland, Vancouver) would probably take around 3,000-5,000 if their opponents had room at the stadiums, but they have thrashed out an agreement to allow 500 away fans into those games. I think this will have to be upwardly revised in the only entire region where soccer is genuinely a major sport, and travel is so possible.
In the past, Toronto have taken 2,000 to Columbus and NY and Washington frequently saw 500-1,000 travelling. This has intensified with the addition of Philadelphia who travel and accepted 500-1,000 away supporters from Washington and NY last season.
Houston had a large travelling contingent in Dallas too, and there are two LA teams sharing a stadium so away support is obviously seen there.

Just renewed my season ticket for the Red Bulls – works out at $20 a game. That’s about 15 quid a game in a new state of the art stadium. First game tomorrow against Seattle Sounders. I’d rather be watching the Albion but this is the next best thing.

I think MLS has really achieved something by setting up a viable soccer league in the face of the big three American sports. The changing population demographic in the States has helped with an influx of soccer loving South Americans.

The resurrection of the New York Cosmos franchise still seems to be on target – Pele and Cantona are already on board and they are looking at potential sites in Queens and Brooklyn for a new stadium.

Sure, it’s never going to rival European soccer but it’s a start.

Turkey and I visited DC United RFK stadium a couple of years ago fantastic stadium when you think 'soccer' over there is almost thought of as a girls sport in all seriousness. So I'd pick them if I was to choose a team.

... one of whom was Roz. She's brought me back a matchday programme and a tasteful Sounders scarf.

Beckham got roundly booed by the Sounders fans, apparently. And Chris Burchall was playing.

Seattle Sounders FC give free scarves to all season ticket holders.

Somewhat obviously, Seattle. I've got a season ticket with the ECS group, works out as $16 a game (and standing is encouraged/beer is allowed).

Tuesday was a pretty crap game from our viewpoint, not helped by torrential rain throughout and no roof. Burchall got some abuse, mainly for being a fatty.

Looking forward to the trip down to Portland in the summer!

Orange County. California.
The Galaxy.

Been living in and around LA for 10 years now. (Live south of the Stadium now in the O.C.) Got to a few games last year with my dad, we are hoping to do a few more this year. The quality is improving, with the influx of older Euros, but more importantly the returning American players from Eng/Euro such as McBride etc, who return with vast experience and can lead the younger generation through.

With the population of California quickly approaching 50% Hispanic/Latin Americans the fan base is growing from this demographic, rather than turning the heads of the more traditional US sports followers. Plus it is the most played sport in all schools across the country, which should produce a more solid following in the next few generations to come.

A must see game is the derby between the Galaxy and Chivas USA who share the HomeDepot Stadium, some very loud and passionate fans for a very heated game.

The whole idea can only get better.

Toronto FC. THough its a 16 hour drive or a several hundred dollar plane ticket, which means I might get down for 1 game this season and thats about it. More concerne d with my local club whos season starts end of may and runs till end of july. 4th tier of North American soccer (PDL) is a quick but brutal compaign. 10 days, 7 matches and something like 4000 km. Fortunently the home matches are spaced out much better. 80 bucks for a ST and first crack at play off tickets. getting excited just thinking about it.

Sad isn't it? We all know the Germans 'do' football better than us (in every respect), but it comes to something when the Americans, THE AMERICANS! know more about football atmosphere than the authorities in this country.

I've had a soft spot for the Whitecaps since I have family in Vancouver and they sent a representative to Withdean before they were MLS and wanted to build a new stadium.
