strings said:Chesterfield drew Charlton - Chesterfield were ball 3, Charlton were ball 5.
If we were still in the draw we would have been ball 3 as we would be the third team alphabetically.
Charlton would have been ball 4 and Chelsea would have been ball 5.
Therefore, if we were still in the cup we would have drawn Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (because ball 3 and ball 5 were drawn).
I really hope that makes sense
Wrong I'm afraid.
The draw for the 3rd round was also done numerically with the following numbers:
1. Arsenal
2. Aston Villa
3. Birmingham
4. Blackburn
5. Bolton
6. Charlton
7. Chelsea
8. Chesterfield
9. Crewe
10. Doncaster
11. Everton
12. Hull
13. Leeds
14. Leicester
15. Liverpool
16. Luton
17. Manchester United
18. MK Dons
19. Newcastle
20. Norwich
21. Notts County
22. Port Vale
23. Portsmouth
24. Reading
25. Sheffield United
26. Southampton
27. Southend
28. Tottenham
29. Watford
30. West Brom
31. West Ham
32. Wycombe
If we had beaten Southend we would have been given ball 6 in that draw and been drawn at Home against ball 5, which would have still been Bolton.
Chelsea would have been reassigned ball number 8, Chesterfields number and had a home tie against West Ham.
In short the numbers for this round woul've been considerably different as over half the ties would change if we'd beaten Southend.
