Just because you did not know until today a gravestone/plaque (its not a statue) to the dog ****** even existed, its no reason to presume others were unaware. Anyone who has a great admiration of the skill and bravery of the Dambuster pilots, acknowledges the incredible determination of Barnes Wallis and knows the overall story will be fully aware there is a memorial to the dog where it was hit by a car. ****** is an integral part of the legendary Dambuster Story,If you cant understand why then its your loss.

Next you'll be claiming that Shep did all of John Noakes's stunts for him :lolol:

No it’s not. It’s a dog. As far as I’m aware the dog wasn’t a pilot, navigator, bomb aimer, gunner or a mechanic. It has the aahhh factor because it was in the film nothing more.

It really is. Squadron mascot and a symbolic side note to the overall story.

I'd default to the opinions of black people. If the consensus is that they don't care one way or the other, then don't bother. beorhthelm is right in that it doesn't change the past, but on the other hand if it is offensive to people today, what is the point in keeping it?

but how do you get those opinions i.e. the larger picture rather than the vocal minority (although they might be reflecting the view of the majority).

I would rather effort be made to rectify real issues such as windrush and other real acts of discrimination rather than a token gesture which frankly only irritates a wide part of the population (not me I get irritated by the diversion from real issues) and only serves to further widen the gap which makes getting real change done even harder.

It’s a dog. 617 squadron will not cease to exist nor will it detract one iota from the gallant efforts of the pilots and crews.

With things like this and the whole "cancel culture", "no plaforming", "statue removal" stuff, it kind of feels like we are on our way to becoming book burners and monument smashers.

Here's an idea, let's not emulate the Nazis and ISIS.

What we need is a bit of balance.

I suggest we take down a statue every time a race fishing thread is started on NSC

My grandad was a engineer at Scampton, he welded the inserts in the casings of the “bouncing” bombs to enable them to rotate. He didn’t like Guy Gibson.

As for the dog, that was his name. We learn from history not airbrush it.

I didn’t bother voting. Maybe a lot of other people also can’t be bothered with a poll about a dog’s name ? It’s all designed to rehash the same boring arguments and has achieved its purpose.

Yes that's right ,the majority of people don't want a small minority dictating our history , i'd think you'll find that's the same sentiments across the country
welcome to the real world

Thank you.
I’m pleased you take such a keen interest in preserving our History. Did you know there are local societies you can join, each dedicated to different aspects whether that be a local museum, landmark or stately home. Lots of like minded people doing important voluntary work. I have a particular interest in museums and about five years ago did a postgraduate qualification in Museum Studies. Really enjoyed it and if you have some time on your hands I can highly recommend it.
