Is there too much moaning at football nowadays?

My Dad has just raised an issue, claiming that at games, the phone in and on North Stand Chat there is far too much moaning.
He's firmly of the belief that in the days of terracing everyone sung and backed the team 100% throughout, even when the going got tough.

But why has this changed? Why do players get slagged on here, and at games? Did it always used to be this way? Does criticising players count as 'supporting' the club, or is it just us voicing our right to an opinion?

Thoughts?
(2000th post, bit of a dull way to bring it up)

Brighton fans have always been a load of whingers. This is my 43rd year as a fan and I don't think there has been much change. Of course there were no fanzines and internet then.

No more moaning at football than there ever was. If anything, the team gets off a tad lightly. Gutless second half against Millwall at Withdean springs to mind.

NSC is another matter altogether. Moanier than a moany thing from Moan City. But got to get it off your chest somehow. Better than kicking the cat.

I don't have a problem with it - i've never known it any other way, but at Withdean it can be a bit of a joke, not helped by the expense and lack of atmosphere.

I don't see it as a problem, but when players read and listen to negative abuse, it can't be a good thing??

Brighton has always had lots of moaners. Hence my username! But the players can hear it more at Withdean and some of the abuse aimed at eg McCammon is not very helpful for a club fighting for its existence.

Oh here we go again, it's "childbirth" this and "PMT" that. I grant you that trying to shit something the size of a bread bin must sting a bit, but then women decide to go into post-natal depression for five years at a stretch afterwards.

You don't see us blokes doing that after something SERIOUS happens, such as the beer is a bit cloudy or the kebab house is closed again due to another cockroach infestation on the way home> We are MANLY about these things and take them on the chin (except when it comes to ManFlu of course, that could stop an army of elephants)

If you think fans are moany moaners then players are just as bad! You wanna hear Tank moan like hell when I tell him he's got salad for tea or I've forgotten to record Randall and Hopkirk

Btw, you are definitely spot on there El Pres about the man flu thing!

Does he often moan about the matches/result/performance?? Or is it a case of 'shit happens'

In answer to WW, it's never a case of shit happens, he does moan big time about it. He sends me a text straight after the game, usually 'f***ing hell' cos hes pissed off. He watches the goals on sky to see what happened, and he reads on here what you lot have said about it, and if I've listened to the game he'll want to know what it sounded like. He doesnt actually come to bed after a game cos he cant sleep properly, especially after a loss, cos he cant relax, his body is knackered but his head isnt!

strange thing is for the most off us we know they are doing the best they can and even old gits like me try to get the crowd singing(been a fan since the LATE 60's.but these shitty all seater stadiums just kill atmosphere.in the good old days(told you i was old)you got in early or you didn't get in with your mates.you were stuck on the fringe of the crew with the nerds and the spotty kids.
nowdays people dont even take thier seat till 15mins after kick off cos they want to fill thier faces with greaseburgers.

bit like tank realy

I know people have a right to moan and they pay their money, etc, but I can't help but think if it is really making them that unhappy then why continue going?

I think there is more whingeing and the reason is that the gulf between fan and player in terms of earnings and lifestyle has never been wider.

I resent the likes of Mark McCammon earning £100,000 per annum for doing f*** all, and I am therefore more likely to have a go because of it.

At the Goldstone there aways used to big a big build up to the players coming out of the tunnel with loads of singing/chanting ages before kick off and a huge welcome when the players ran out. On Tuesday there was silence until they ran out and then just polite applause. Even that was fairly muted as most people seemed to be wearing gloves! It seems that whinging has taken the place of singing and getting behind the team. I blame all seater stadiums

Why can't we stand like the away fans seem to be allowed to?

I don't think there's necessarily more moaning these days but, as people have said, all-seater stadia (especially tin-pot ones with no sodding roof) kill most of the positive stuff off. I'd take exception to the idea that Brighton fans are unusually critical, though: some Yorkshire supporters can be harsh to their own team - the mighty Donny Rovers, for example, get some REAL stick off theirs - and some southerners like West Ham have to be heard to be believed at times. And Millwall recently were pretty "vocally unappreciative" at half-time (although sadly it seemed to work on that occasion).

I think it's more that we're all aware of just how whiny some of our own lot are, as we hear it week in, week out; naturally it varies according to how the season's going, what we've done in the transfer market (ahem), etc. And NSC is Moan Central, of course, but then it isn't exactly representative.
