BBC says they've had a bid accepted for Clint Dempsey.

My thread looks silly now.

Still, the fact they have £7m to spend on a 29 year old suggests they have SOME wonga.

I'd say with this signing it's Dempsey that is lacking ambition. Assuming they get him and no one else (ie Liverpool) comes in with their own bid

Lerner has plenty of money, but just doesn't want to spend anything significant any more on Aston Villa. I can see a takeover happening rather soon - leading to an upturn in fortunes on the pitch - assuming that RL doesn't go all 'Dog in the manger' with the club.

in the sack race thread i've called out Lambert as contender, because their squad is poor and done nothing for a few years except get weaker. I cant see how he'll turn it around and the owners will want a more experienced head to rescue them if they are bottom come end of October.

as for Dempsey, i'd be pretty amazed if he chose to go there when Liverpool and Sunderland have been interested. he'd stay at Fulham shirley and wait for Janurary window?

Judging by the start Villa have made they seem like relgation fodder so bit of a bizarre move for Dempsey, its highly likely Fulham will finish above Villa, so must be offering him 10k a week more or something, still hes getting on a bit now so got to think about that.

OMG. Falling for the gross spend argument.

LFC, Spurs & Arsenal for example have also sold heavily to fund buying, so never had the expensively assembled squad at any one stage,

compared to the Man City and Chelsea squads which have a great cost/value at any one time, subidised by £100m's of losses bankrolled by billionaires.

Giving them trophies.

Sacked in October?! Lambert has only been there for a cuppla months, FFS!

For all the shambolic nonsense thats been going on at VP in recent years, I think he'll be given at least the season to turn things around. He's a very capable young Manager IMO & I certainly think he's the right man to motivate the non-performing mess that has been masquerading as a Premier Division first team squad.
