Is the Wilkins saga the biggest cock up made by a football club?

I would say that holding the 1985 European Cup Final at Heysel in the mistaken belief that it was fit for purpose rates pretty highly, also the 1989 FA Cup Semi Final at Hillsborough and maybe allowing people to smoke in a stand made largely from wood at Bradford some years earlier...all of those were grossly incompetent and resulted in huge loss of life.

However, other than the board who sold our ground without building a new one, the recent managerial shenanigans rate pretty highly...the only fortunate thing is that nobody has died!

By this club yes.But there again you did have idiots like US who did a Wilkins meter every week, even know we finished 7th.

You've got me there. As its turned out we would have been far better off with Wilkins. But why the unpleasantness. Is it not possible for you to do a post about someone who disagreed with you without putting an insult as well. Its pretty childish really.

Wilkens shouldn't of gone, I know he didnt have that propers manager factor but he got us to on eplace off the play offs.

Needless to say, we are not going to get anywhere near that this year

Yes definitely. Wilkins got us to 7th place, we were looking towards this season as a major step to Falmer and possibly an play-off place. Now we've gone so far backwards, we're in a major relegation battle and the problems lie on MA feet!

I've been supporting the Albion since 1980 and I can honestly say that I have never been as depressed by the playing/managerial side of the club as I am right now, so I would say it's right up there in terms of a cock-up.

If Wilkins was, as it seems, effectively forced out for supporting the players against a Chairman who showed a lack of commitment to keeping our best young players then Dick Knight is ultimately responsible for this calamity. His decision to appoint Adams smacks of a PR stunt to boost season ticket sales at the expense of taking the club forward on the pitch. If he had done his homework on Adams he'd have realised the man is not the bright young hopeful he once was touted as being but was rather a half-decent assistant manager at this level at best.

Knight needs to get his head out of his arse and do something before he taints his own reputation for good. Sadly I fear it's too late for Micky on that score.

I like you US, but how naive can you be?
To post that Wilkins-O-Meter and in doing so, put your oar in to be judged afterwards on NSC :bla: - you think "idiot" is weighing in on you somewhat childishly? :bounce:

Sorry mate, but getting what you ask for when you stick your neck out like that, is par for the North Stand course. You wouldn't get any better on the stadium stands if you stood to raise a fuss and got proven way off the mark, and come to think of it - neither would you in the House of Parliament.
You have to take it on the chin, again, I'm afraid

I don't know. After McGhee was fired Dick Knight came out on Sky Sports, in the Argus, on the radio and said he listens to the fans and he decided that he would fire McGhee. No mention of the board...

Thats correct. Dick Knight and the board are the same thing.

This is not a personal attack on Ray Bloom or other directors but do you remember when they finally stuck their head above the parapit wall during the Archer days. Well if it took them that long in those times they are hardly going to steam into Dick Knight are they.

1. Not taking on Ian Wright.
2. Not taking on Roy Keane because he was too small and taking Paul McCarthy instead.
3. Sacking Chris Catlin.
4. Letting Stanley, Archer & Belotti anywhere near the club.

He would not have stayed that long with us however we could have made some cash out of him.

dunno about that, however I think it sent a message out concerning our ambitions

As far as our club is concerned sacking Wilkins must be in the top five f*** ups.

1 Selling the Goldstone. (YES I KNOW)
2 Jimmy Case as manager.
3 Sacking Wilkins.
4 Selling Dean Saunders for peanuts
5. Did not like the look of Roy Keane.

I am sure there a far worse but I cant think of anymore.

Rejecting Ian Wright and selling CKR for peanuts, bringing back Alan Mullery and those Focus Fuckers

Hmm, thats looking at it with a massive amount of hindsight though. There wasn't that much of a fuss when he moved on to Germany, he wasn't worth the 250k odd we would have needed to pay for a house.

well you and I agree on f*** all anyway.

Personally I think he was worth the punt. He gave us something that when we got into the championship we were missing and that was someone to compete and hold the ball up ( and score goals)

I actually quite liked Iwelumo and was fairly pleased with what he did with us, but for 250k ish there were better players around. As it turned out we ended up bunging Virgo up there who did a bloody good job. I think it was probably more of a cock up not giving him the chance when he came back from Germany. We were so light up front after Virgo had gone he would have been a decent replacement.
