Is Slade doing enough to keep the job next season?

The problem is that the results are so bad it will be virtually impossible to keep him.

I think he made an impact and we definitely picked up for a few games but we're sliding now. What worries me is that at Scunthorpe he thought a midfield of Virgo and El Abd would be good enough and today he chose the utterly useless (isn't he always?) Fraser. Those decisions set alarm bells ringing for me, because no manager should think any of those players are good enough for league one midfield roles.

Overall I wouldn't mind him staying as I think he'd release the crap (whereas a new manager may be inclined to keep everyone and assess it for himself), but I wouldn't be gutted if he went either.

Who would you have chosen instead today with so many out through injury. Jarrett is here short term and IMHO has not shown himself to be any better then Fraser, and at least Fraser is our player and does care.

To be fair to Slade he has made a difference. He has having to work with one hand tied behind his back because Adams and White were allowed to bring in 11 or 12 players in Jan/early Feb before he was appointed. I think he would do a good job with his own players, but of course if we go down he may not want to stay.

Still it is nice to see that in the true spirit of the last few seasons we are giving him the benefit of the doubt and sticking by him!

Is he good enough in his own right? Yep, I'd say so.

Based on what though? Managers can only be judged on results and his have been poor even through a 'honeymoon' period.

Maybe he could do a good job next season, but if I were making the decision about his contract I'd need to see something on the pitch that might support that.

Well I did say the Virgo/El Abd midfield at Scunthorpe as well as Fraser today, but just to answer the question about today I would have played virtually ANYONE apart from Fraser. We had Jarrett, Birchall and Sexy Seb sitting on the bench. And on the pitch we had Fraser, Loft and Cox. That's mental! All three of the subs should have started in place of the three on the pitch. Fraser might (and it is only a might) care but that's not good enough when he touches the ball approximately three times in a half. He's one of the worst footballers I've EVER seen. Cox at least has a bit of fight in him and gets involved so he's better, but in terms of actual productivity he's next to useless I'm afraid. And Doug is too lightweight. I don't mind him, but he's not the answer.

You say Jarrett doesn't care but isn't it the manager's job to make him care? Jarrett, Birchall and Carole have INFINITELY more talent than the wasters we had on the pitch, and I'd take talent over a modicum of 'caring' every time.

You say Jarrett has talent, but I have not seen it yet. Have yet to see him have a good game and playes more bad passes then good ones. Carole is a luxery and actually apart from a couple of 10 minute spells has been pretty poor so far. Birchall I agree about. I would love him to play Centre Midfield but needs a holding player behind him. I think he is one of our few midfield players that can actually play a creative pass.

Soon we'll have another of those lists of who should have the job,you know ,2 pages of names of folk who wouldn't touch the job with a 10 foot pole, and the question then is : who would take it?

No,stick with Slade whatever, and go for some kind of continuity.

We should also remember that most of our players would struggle to get into any other league 1 teams,so we are likely to continue with most of those as well.Just have to hope that our 57 points keep us up,and that next season is better.

When do the fixtures come out?

Keep him and let him select his own backroom team.

He will be out at the end of the season though i think he was on a loser from the start......why let Adams bring in 6 players in january and then sack him and secondly why let white then bring in 6 loan players...these decision just make no sense what-so-ever

Should have stuck with Micky.

It worries me that we have supporters who, despite the situation over the first two thirds of the season still believe we should have stuck with Adams. One can only assume they don't go to Withdean that often or if they do, they can't see the pitch. We are in this mess because it was patently obvious that Adams was not the manager he was when he was first here.

We are probably going down with Slade but not because of him. Had we kept Adams, we would probably be down already, sad as it is to say.

Ince didn't want the job and Pardew was probably too astute to join a doomed club. He might have come for next season if we stay up by the skin of our teeth but don't expect him to manage a League 2 club.

Alex Ferguson and Capello may have too. Does it matter - Ince refused to come here, and we don't know that Pardew was prepared to come here either.

In Div 2, Slade is going to be one of the best managers we'll be able to attract- be realistic in terms of our status and budget.

Sorry- slow writer- just seen your post Drew.

Managers are judged by results:

Micky Adams 32 pts from 32 games = average 1.00

Russell Slade 4pts from 7 games = average 0.57

It's a no brainer to me.

Supposedly required for safety: 50pts

season total on a point average: 46pts. We'd still fall short, so makes little difference.

If we had have stuck with micky then in hindsight we would all ready be relegated. He was spiraling further and further into oblivion and taking us with him. At least we have a manager who has more passion and isnt some washed up Northerner who results to coaching at Ardingly.

I think the home performances have improved under Slade. Away we've been dire by all accounts. However, changing managers will cause problems.

1. The out of contract players. Unless there is someone waiting in the wings which is highly unlikely then at best we will have a manager who is coming in blind, he might know about some of the players but not a massive amount. At worst we end up with Knight/White/Lloyd/Booker (any combination) making the decisions which is not a good situation.
2. Who would come in? I'm not usually one who goes in for this argument but at this stage it seems more true than it has before. Can we tempt some promising young manager here, Mark Robins or someone like that? Any of the usual names that get bandied about of unemployed managers would not be much different than Slade.
3. How long do you give him? We may need a while to rebuild. League Two is not a strong division but even so, we are possibly looking at a major turnover of players and staff. It might not all come together instantly.

I think the comment about him being good in his own right is referring to his previous success. You can see the difference he made to Yeovil.

However, you're right, there has been little evidence since he joined us of those talents.

Can they?

The Board - any board - has to take into consideration much more than just results.
