Well???

A guy at work over the weekend had his card cloned, and account cleared out by a fraudster online, so when I read What car do you drive thread, it made me think.

Over time, all these innocent threads started by various users, have created a hot bed for potential fraudsters and lurkers to the sight??

From reading through the threads posted, I think I have found out the following about lots of people I have met a couple of times in real life, and people I have never met before.

If you look into this site relativley deeply You get to know basic information, as well as information for potential passwords etc

- Your Age
- Where you were born
- Which town you live in, the first 3 or 4 characters of your post code
- Town where you work and nature of your job
- ethnic background
- Car the you drive
- how long it took you to past your test
- Marital status and number of kids
- names of partners and kids
- marriage/relationship break ups
- schools attended and subjects studied
- last purchase
- favourite albion player/manager
- pets names
- mobie phone network
- home phone/internet/tv packages
- tax codes your on
- favourite bands/singers
- favourite places online to go shopping
- when and where you are on holiday

Then some people, from NSC become friends on Facebook/Myspace etc, which divulges further information, i.e. contact details, DOB, even addresses.

NSC must be a stalker/fraudster paradise??? And theres probably more useful information on here if you look back

Obviously if you have someones bank details it would be easy but I read somewhere that identity fraud / theft is much rarer and more difficult than we have been led to believe and that is is bigged up by card insurance companies etc but is actually hard to do much with. Not sure how accurate that is?

And yet you use your own name as your NSC username

but that is only because when you go to Albion games, a lot of people use user names in real life, and I would hate to be referred to something stupid when it comes to introduction in real life.

It is normally one of the 1st questions I get asked, when a Brighton fan I havent met before gets introduced to me, "what is your user name on NSC." And more often than not, if you say your user name, then said person will refer to me as that, rather than my real name - which in my opinion is a very sad state of affairs

Some good ideas here. I'm off to start 2 threads

(1) Who do you bank with?
(2) Whats your mothers maiden name?

both these bits of information are on here, I guarantee it.

Bank with - a thread about bank charges, and who you wrote too and how the bank replied

Mothers maiden name - a thread about what is your pornstar name - i.e. your 1st pets name and mothers maiden name added together

Unfortunately identity theft isn't that difficult. I regularly have to get copies of birth certificates for clients as part of my job and no-one has ever questioned my right to them. Doesn't seem too big a step to applying for them with a scam in mind if you were so inclined. Put that together with the sort of info readily available from on-line sources and the potential for fraud is frightening

Anyone can order anyone's birth certificate. They are public documents. They cost either £7 or £10 online, depending on whether you know the reference number or not. And you don't have to give a reason for wanting one.

It's Facebook users that are most at risk IMHO. beggars belief how many people have their entire CV and personal details on there. Completely at the mercy of all those dodgy applications :shootself

Nor did i, but (and i've no reason to think this is due to NSC..) last week i had some tyke set up a paper mandate for a standing order in my company's name, for four lots of nearly £1500 to buy a car... It's only because i spotted the 1st installment on my statement that i managed to catch it..
The signature was pretty good so my Bank let it through, but watch out everyone i'd say.

Only other time was back in 1987, starting my 1st 'proper job' at the Downs hotel, my NI number had already been used by some euro shunter..

The most curious thing..
A lot of people on here seem to divulge alot of personal information in polls and elsewhere which might be useful for a potential fraudster (or even stalker if you feel so inclined), but as said before the Myspace/Bebo/Facebook type sites tend to give away even more.

You have to remember when posting on here that anyone can read the stuff you put, and not everyone is your "friend".

Getting enough information might take a bit of time and effort, but that is what potential fraudsters/stalkers do for a living.

So if anyone wants to know my bank account details, please contact Mr Kodogogo of the Central Bank Nigeria, who has approximately £20,000,000,000,000 of my money just waiting to be sent to whoever applies with their usual details, passwords, bank accounts, pets names, notable dates, tattoos in interesting places, and mothers' maiden names etc...........
