Is it time to ditch the whole travel malarkey?

Would it not be possible to go back to that outdated system of get yourself along to game? Would be quite happy if free travel,p/r and special buses came to an end.Keep my £50 and stick it in the tin for players,i think the club have got themselves into a no win situation and the £50 x 22,000 would put a few quid back into the clubs hands.
Would anyone stop coming if they had to use and pay for public transport???
What do reckon pups:blush:

Don't give Barber ideas. I absolutely rely on P + R and firmly believe it's essential.

No, I would have to pay 4 pounds 50 on the train to every game, which would be 103 pounds 50 every season, more than double of the transport levy we have now.

I try to keep the cost in context but given that I travel from Orpington it is not a major issue for me. If i'm staying sober it's Mill road P&R which is very good value; if not I will tend to buy a train ticket to Brighton rather than Haywards Heath to avoid any argument about timing (given that we are usually outside the Nelson before 12). The difference is about £2. So all I get for free (sorry, included in the price - nothing is free) is the train to Falmer. Probably time to not get up het about it and accept that ticket prices are variable, are affordable to some and not others and that any form of encouragement for people to use public transport (I include P&R in that) is an essential given the stadium location.

I save 90p per game with the £50 travel scheme so I would be better off if they scrapped it, just like a lot of others travelling from the east.

Same. If it was voluntary again then everyone east of Lewes travelling on the train wouldn't take it up. I also have 2 kids I have to pay for and yet it only costs a quid on the train for the entire journey. Oh well, winners and losers on swings and roundabouts I suppose. C'est la vie.

I've abandoned the P&R, trains etc and opted for Seagull Travel from Uckfield. More expensive but I will cut down my spend at the Amex to compensate.

The S bus got me out of my lethargy and out to the Amex for quite a few games last season. Probably back to the radio again now. When you reach a certain age there's a limit to how much you can be ars*d.

Quite possibly the first post you have ever made that Isnt complete nonsense and I agree with. Blimey. Make p and r pay as you go and make Southern responsible for rail payment like at every other ground. If high congestion grounds like The Emirates and Upton Park can work that way so can we.

Do we really? If the club are struggling where's the sense in making them pay for our transport?

I want a solvent club, getting myself to watch the team should be down to me surely???

Exactly. It was nice that I saved a quite considerable amount of money by using the subsidised travel for a couple of years but in the long run the club is losing money hand over fist. Over the 2 years at The Amex I have saved roughly £164 by traveling by train.

It's been mentioned before, the only part that should be free/subsidised is the bit from Brighton to Falmer as this is where tickets cannot be checked.

Good idea probably, would mean a bigger player budget.

Would be handy if the club could negotiate 'match-day only' season tickets at a great rate with B&H buses and the trains.

It's part of the reason we got the Amex in the first place. It's all in the small print.

This may have started as a good idea, but the town has one huge problem. Cars. There are far to many of them, and just not enough space on the road.

Yes. Scrap the Park & Ride scheme, and what would happen. Chaos. People would just turn up in their own cars, to a ground with very little parking facilities.

I live in Queens Park Road, and apart from walking, I could not get to the ground any cheaper than the £50 subsidy.

so if you got your £50 back it would cost you another £2'ish per game on the bus,not a great price to rid the club of this huge white elephant?

I think, by necessity, we painted ourselves into a corner during the planning process and now the chickens are coming home to roost. Time to slaughter a few sacred cows I think.

i have a rail season ticket to London, so technically i could get away with travelling for free to Falmer (via a rather odd route to London via Lewes) and back. So, for me the subsidy doesn't help. However, i am mindful that there are many people who rely on this to get there.

I think I agree that the only bit that needs to be free is the section from Brighton -> Falmer and Lewes -> Falmer where the sheer volume of people precludes ticket checks.

Agreed.

From a purely selfish point of view, it should be scrapped as I already have to buy a train ticket to Lewes from Eastbourne and it really isn't much less than a ticket to Falmer, even paying the extra 50p would be cheaper than paying whatever the subsidy I pay is.

Not to mention tickets will be cheaper, which the club would put a positive spin on.
