again, you're confusing geneal wealth with monarchy. the aristocracy means bugger all today, certainly hasnt foisted anyone on us. that was done by first 25k people of Uxbridge (or 35k of Norwich depending on your idiot), then thousands of members of the Conservative party. pretty much the same as any other country, a person seeks public office and goes through the institutions and processes on their way to that office.

Exactly. As much as I dislike the politics of both Trump and Johnson, they were at least elected to power and were accountable to the electorate after a maximum of 4 or 5 years. Boris had no less power as PM in a monarchy than he’d have had in a republic. QE2 had no power whatsoever to stop him; only parliament did.

We need an elected upper house; renamed anything but the Lords (ffs) and the lower chamber the Commons (ffs) needs to be renamed and filled with MPs based on anything but First past the post and constituencies that go back to the rotten boroughs. The Queen was an amazing public servant to this country but she is from another age. Indeed. Imagine too if the lush that was Princess Margaret had been born ahead of Elizabeth? Edward VIII had questionable political leanings and maybe it was just as well Wallis-Simpson caused him to abdicate, otherwise WW2 might have turned out differently. George III was barking mad, George IV was unrestrainedly extravagant, the list goes on.

We have been very fortunate to have had a monarch as level-headed and reliable as Elizabeth, but history shows us there have been plenty of bad eggs too. Having a monarchy is a complete lottery.

That amount of distance between cousins is almost neglible whereas Prince Philip was related more closely to him.

Charles has said he is going to trim the family back. Clarence House is being closed down, for instance. Possibly even the grave and favour apartments at Kensington Palace.
