Really can't be arsed to look it up, but could it be a World Cup record to score only 2 goals in the group stage yet still qualify?

The same in 1970

1-0 v Romania
0-1 v Brazil
1-0 v Czechoslovakia

However, at the same World Cup Italy scored once to qualify from their group:

1-0 v Sweden
0-0 v Uruguay
0-0 v Israel

No - In 1986 when there were just 6 groups and the 4 best 3rd placed teams also went through Poland qualified for the knock out stages having scored just 1 goal
their record was Poland P3 W1 D1 L1 F1 A3 GD−2 Pts3 (admittedly i have only gone back to 1982)

Plenty of teams have gone through scoring just 2 goals in the group stages, including as runners up or best 3rd placed teams.

In 1994, Italy finished their group in 3rd place but still progressed and finally ended up losing on penalties in the final to Brazil. The group finished as follows

Team Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
Mexico 3 1 1 1 3 3 0 4
Republic of Ireland 3 1 1 1 2 2 0 4
Italy 3 1 1 1 2 2 0 4
Norway 3 1 1 1 1 1 0 4

Surely Italy in 1970. 1 goal in winning their group. Ironically they scored 4 in both their quarters and semis then conceded 4 in the final!

We never do it the easy way. I'm amazed we've scored this many goals and STILL qualified for the knockout stages 3 TIMES before.
