Just reading a story in the paper today about Johann Cruyff and why he didn't go to the 1978 World Cup.

Looking at the pictures of him from those days he somehow radiates cool - not easy when you're a skinny sod with a 70s haircut in an orange shirt.

Pele and Maradone might have been a bit better but NO ONE was cooler than JC I reckon.

agreed. coolest (and one of the best) ever. The BBC did a great documentary about the dutch team in 1974, just about the most entertaining team in memory.

Sorry guys, Robin Friday for me. A man who sticks two fingers up at a goalkeeper as he rolls the ball past him is far too cool to be playing for the likes of Reading (all disrespect intended to Reading...)

When I was young in the early to mid 80s I used to go with my family to a resort near Cannes in the South of France. One time there was a guy staying next door with his son. The guy seemed to be quite good with a football.

Turns out that guy was Johann Cruyff who was with his son Jordi.

They probably wouldn't recognise me now.

A few years ago I read 'Ajax Barcelona Cruyff: The ABC of an obstinate maestro' and was very dissapointed. I'm not sure if it was the book or just Cruyff himself but he didn't seem to live up to my expectations of how I expected him to be. The book portrayed him as a bit dull and tediously difficult to manage, play alongside. I might read it again just to be sure.

That said, tremendous player. Not many get a 'turn' named after them

Played his last ever game at the Goldstone I believe, before getting sent off for kicking Lawrenson. Walked down the tunnel and out the ground and just buggered off. Cool as f***!

Well not quite, not according to Wikepedia. I join the Robin Friday bandwagon!

`Another time whilst playing against Mark Lawrenson Friday became agitated by the future BBC pundit. He kicked Lawrenson in the face and received a red card before defecating in Lawrenson's kit bag`.
