I've noticed that often when a goal is scored, they replay it from behind the goal so that you can see it better, and I think, "If this shows everything better, why don't they just show it from this angle as the default view? Why not just give us the best view all the time?"
If the default angle were to show it from behind the goal, I think it would be rare that they would then go to a camera over by the half-way line to see a better angle when they show replays.
Also, the objective is to get the ball in the goal, but when the camera is located on the half way line, you cannot see the goalposts probably >90% of the time. With the camera located behind the goal, you would be able to see the goalposts all the time. And because the pitch is rectangular, you can see much more of the pitch, and more of the players at any time.
From the halfway line, as the camera pans to the left or right, the viewing angle of the pitch tilts so that everything is at a tilted angle. Players on the near side of the pitch appear larger than those on the far side. There is no reason why this should be so: players on one flank are not more significant to what is going on in the game than those on the other flank. When viewed from behind the goal, players nearer the goal would appear larger. Also, from the halfway line, players that are no longer crucial to the action block the view of what's going on. When viewed from behind the goal, only those defenders who are between the ball and the goal would obscure the view of the ball.
