Was that a rhetorical question? To be honest if you go somewhere near West Croydon bus station, you can hop on the 157 bus to the ground.

Not many pubs near East Croydon. Only the big wetherspoons I think.

If I were you I'd take the Overground up from Norwood Junction to New Cross Gate (15 mins or so) Fair few nice pubs up there. New Cross House, Royal Albert and Amersham Arms are both good and right near the station...

Yes it IS a dump. But the Porter and Sorter next to the station could be worse, and if you walk a little further there's a bar that's actually quite plush (for Croydon) but I forget its name. The Glamorgan I think.

But don't get excited, most of EC is a total hole that you won't want to spend any time in.

East Croydon doesn't have much to recommend it although there are plenty of worse stations in the land. In terms of pubs though it's a bit of a non starter, there's a few round Norwood Junction which would be more suitable.
