My son is a red head and he's drop dead cute - and most people comment on how lovely his hair is... I have never understood why people with red hair get so much lip...beyond me...

I guess like everything else, it's not in the words, it's in how they are delivered.
I'm ginger, so how could I be offended by being referred to as ginger, when erm, that's the colour of my hair. Commander, that's exactly the point, it's an identifying aspect, so you would say "mark the ginger one" or "the blond fella" or "the wrinkly old slaphead" .
If it's being used in a way of identification, I don't really see the harm. If someone is making a generalised insult, then that's different, although still not RACSIST, as we are not a seperate race y'know. I know we are phenomenally more attractive, but believe it or not we are still the same race as the rest of you munters.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I do wonder whether that is a case of us whites worrying about offending others so much that we tip-toe around and that causes more problems. That was basically the reason we all used the word "coloured" about 20 years ago. That came out of whites hang-ups about the word "black", rather than from black people themselves. The result was that MORE offense was caused.
