Irish Sim Cards used in England

A mate of mine is coming over from Ireland and wants to know if he can use his Irish sim in England? I have been Googling it, but can't really find a definitive answer. I think he would have to pay roaming charges to use it here? Or does it not matter, can he just use it as normal?

I'm sure there must be atleast one NSCer who works in Vodafone or something like that. Thanks in advance.

Same as going abroad anywhere, he will have to pay roaming charges.

This is probably a stupid question, but if you text someone in England using an Irish sim card, do you have an Irish number? It does feel a stupid question to ask, but I don't know.

Yes you will still have your irish number. It won't transform into an English number

Put there will be roaming charges, so any pay as you go credit will be gone rather sharpish...

Cheers both.

You still have your Irish number and it costs a fortune in roaming charges so if your friend likes to talk on the phone a lot he would be in trouble and debt

if it's of any help I have a local SIM for use in Holland and another one for Hong Kong, both of which I visit regularly. By far the best way.

Just make sure phone is unlocked and get an English (local) sim card for use when over there if he can not be arsed to piss around just check with his mobile provider over here for deals Vodafone/tesco etc can do decent deals so International calls are not that bad in price. Get him to ring his service provider or check online if he is registered.

If he makes sure to check his plan before going he should be able to use it in the UK for out-of-bundle rates and nothing more with most networks now - e.g. calls/texts won't come from his bundle allocation (if he has any) but will be charged identically to what they'd cost in Ireland. Sometimes requires locking your roaming to one network - you'll get charged the full old roaming prices on any other.

It can get even more confusing with an Irish phone in Northern Ireland as the plan I'm on is "borderless" assuming I roam on T-Mobile...
