You know these things you can get that you plug into your Ipod and they transmit a signal to your car radio and you can listen to it through your car speakers, are they any good then?

Yes they work quite well but if they lose the signal, as mine does quite often, you'll get a loud radio interference sound to replace the music.

They were initially as technicaly you are setting up a (very tiny) pirate radio station, but the law was tweeked last year I think so it's all nice and legal now.

They are called itrips and work really well. They will never be as clear as a CD but they work pretty well. I have found with mine that to get the minimum interference you have to play around with the sound on the stereo and the sound on the ipod. Also you need to find a frequency on the radio where there isn't a radio stattion that will interfere.

That's what I found, but none of that is difficult to achieve. One thing I did notice is that you have to have the sound right up on the ipod, then you can adjust on the car stereo.

The law was changed last year - there is now a maximum broadcast range you can broadcast without a license I believe.

Anyway, I got one for Christmas and it's excellent. I can't remember what my model is called but my wife did her research and found one that rated highly in various reviews. I think it was aboout £50 - money well spent IMO.

I have a Belkin one, I think I got it from Dabs when they offered it half price in an internet offer, once you have tuned in the radio to a decent blank station it works really well. However, if you travel fairly long distances regularly you may have to re-tune when you get into an area where a station uses the same frequency.

Edit: Although this one does the scanning for you

I find they're pretty good. Work best when volume on player is about 85%, any higher and the sound distorts.

They're ok, but I can never seem to find a truly empty frequency that will work all over town and it frequently breaks up and distorts.

I'm thinking of getting a new stereo with an iPod connector as they're nowhere near as steep as they once were.

You can get one type that automatically searches for the weakest FM frequency in the area you are in and tunes to that, if you get what I mean.

I tend to go for either end of the scale...87.5 or 108.8 i think....works fine....

Same, any frequency around the 87 mark seems to work fine whenever we play our Ipod on the Itrip.

Griffin iTrip is your fella and you can get them for under £20 nowadays.

The iTrip has 2 settings - I can't remember what they're called now but set it to the one that is not aligned to UK FM frequencies and you can then get the iTrip to output at 87.5 which is low as most car stereos seem to go. You should be OK on this frequency pretty much everywhere as no-one else seems to broadcast that low.

And, as above, they were technically illegal but no longer are.

Strange people commenting on volume since the iPod dock does not carry volume strength, I don't believe. I know I can have my iPod on zero volume and it doesn't affect what comes out of my car stereo.

advancedmp3players.co.uk used to do an incar MP3 HD which was cool, looked today but its no longer there.
Would prefer that over having to use my walkman with FM transmitter and/or MP3 CDs anyday!
