I was thinking this today. There isn't really anyone obvious but I definately wouldn't want Bell in. The Aussies would love it if he played, he is scared shitless of them, he looks like a little boy lost playing against them. I guarantee he will fail if he plays. Would much rather see Cook still play to be honest as I think he has the talent and is going through a blip. He was absolutely superb when he first came in to the team and will be again. He is much stronger mentally than Bell also

Ah the Bell bashing.

2005 Bell looked lost but actually in the 5-0 he got some scores and when he was brought back in last summer he did get some runs.

There are players worse than him in the side.

He hasn't really improved though has he? An average of 25 after 25 innings and no centuries is not good enough for a top order batsman. And as I said, it would give the Aussies a lift seeing him come in as they think he is very weak

His average is still around the 40 mark.

He is a decent player, just as ever he is an easy target.

Cook should have been dropped 18 months ago to sort out his issues around his off stump, instead England make him vice captain.

Bell deserved to be dropped, but he took his chance when Pietersen got injured and has got some decent score since.

Averages 25 against the Aussies.

I agree that Cook should have been dropped before to work on his technique, as Strauss was and it worked for him. Im just struggling to think of decent alternatives.

Actually, this might be real bias but i can't think i've seen a better batsmen than Ed joyce in the last 2 years so maybe he deserves another chance?

Bell now is definitely a different player to the one from even 2 years ago. He has always had bags of talent but in the last year or so it seems that he has matured and got a new found confidence. Its really the mental side that he lacks as in terms of technique he has far more going for him than any of the top 6 of England's batting.

I would go with Trott, he looks like he can open the batting. Australia away is not the time to be blooding someone new in the team.

If Cook gets runs in the warm up games though I am prepared to give him another go as he has the temperament to play against the Aussies.

I can't believe people are dissing Bell. He's got a test average of nearly 43 and made runs against SA last winter - when other batsmen didn't.

I must say that I'm not wholly convinced about Trott. He did well in his first test but looked a bit lost against SA and if there's any weakness you can bet the Aussies will find it.

My guess is that if Cook goes, Carberry is next up but Lyth might be worth a look too.

I can't understand why Marcus T cannot play in 'home' tests ?

a) Because he's retired from test cricket. He's made that very clear.

b) This current watchword in the England side is consistency - that's the whole aim of central contracts. What would be consistent about having one player opening one test and another one opening the next?

I think they'll stick with Cook for the whole of this series, which means he's got 2 or 3 more innings to get back on track. I think he will.

Is there an English opener better than Cook forcing his way into the side? Not at the moment. We can carry Cook throught this series and still win it, and it would be stupid to drop a guy who's broken all sorts of batting records over the last 5 years.

The Aussies also respect Cook because he scored a double hundred against them in 2005 at age 20. Michael Carberry, on the other hand, holds no fear.

i have many of the same issues as trescothick and it's not fun believe me! such a shame as he's badly missed in my view, but knowing what he goes through in his head all he has is my sympathy

it's very easy to judge him if you don't fully understand
