Great words , but it has to be said these last few months feel like a TKO for me.

Another Americanism.

When the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go out and win one for the Gipper.

Guaranteed to make most male Americans over 50 teary eyed, wankers.

If this doesn't tug at your heart strings, nothing will:

And here's me worried about my knee. Pretty amazing at the end when he is running like that,

I don't know what to say really.
Three minutes
to the biggest battle of our professional lives
all comes down to today.
Either
we heal
as a team
or we are going to crumble.
Inch by inch
play by play
till we're finished.
We are in hell right now, gentlemen
believe me
and
we can stay here
and get the shit kicked out of us
or
we can fight our way
back into the light.
We can climb out of hell.
One inch, at a time.

Now I can't do it for you.
I'm too old.
I look around and I see these young faces
and I think
I mean
I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make.
I uh....
I pissed away all my money
believe it or not.
I chased off
anyone who has ever loved me.
And lately,
I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life
things get taken from you.
That's, that's part of life.
But,
you only learn that when you start losing stuff.
You find out that life is just a game of inches.
So is football.
Because in either game
life or football
the margin for error is so small.
I mean
one half step too late or to early
you don't quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast
and you don't quite catch it.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game
every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us
to pieces for that inch.
We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch.
Cause we know
when we add up all those inches
that's going to make the f***ing difference
between WINNING and LOSING
between LIVING and DYING.

I'll tell you this
in any fight
it is the guy who is willing to die
who is going to win that inch.
And I know
if I am going to have any life anymore
it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch
because that is what LIVING is.
The six inches in front of your face.

Now I can't make you do it.
You gotta look at the guy next to you.
Look into his eyes.
Now I think you are going to see a guy who will go that inch with you.
You are going to see a guy
who will sacrifice himself for this team
because he knows when it comes down to it,
you are gonna do the same thing for him.

That's a team, gentlemen
and either we heal now, as a team,
or we will die as individuals.
That's football guys.
That's all it is.
Now, whattaya gonna do?

Unfortunately I have just had a grr moment, all because of your last sentence. Are you an American because the use of the word fit instead of fitted is what gives me grr moments when I am reading books written by Americans.
I am aware that that grammatically each is acceptable, but fit instead of fitted is just not British.

Not american, just taught differently I guess...

"Fitted" implies when sliding an object into an available space, the object settles neatly into the space. eg This requires some sort of postive and negative components. eg a peg and a hole.
"Fit" is where two objects are of the same or complementary size and shape and are a "fit". This can be two positive or two negative components. eg "He and his wife were the perfect fit for each other".

Absolutely agree with the use of fit in your example, it's the only version that fits. See what I did there?
My aversion, a bit like dragging your nails down a blackboard, is the way it's used by Americans.
His suit fit him well or the suit fit him well. Grrr.
Like all small things that annoy people it's just a personal thing. I seem to read a lot of books written by Americans or other nationalities that are proof read by Yanks.

Believe in yourselves, NEVER give up and always keep fighting. You have ONLY failed when you give up.

If you think you’re beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you’d like to win, but think you can’t,
It’s almost a cinch you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost.
For out in the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow’s will,
It’s all a state of mind.

If you think you’re out-classed, you are;
You’ve got to think high to rise.
You’ve got to be sure of yourself,
If you ever want to obtain a prize.

Life’s battles does not always go,
To the stronger or faster man.
But, soon or late, the man who wins,
IS THE MAN WHO THINKS HE CAN!!
