I have waited years for the opportunity to see them in concert, and now my time hath finally come!

And so it begins…

Indeed, it's the Witchwood era.

To see them with Wakeman now, well I'd probably just explode.

And thus it hath been duly spoken.

YouTube - The Strawbs-Lay Down

By still waters I lay down with the lambs,
In pastures green I made peace with my soul,
And I cared not for the night,
While my guiding star shone bright,
By still waters I lay down,
I lay down...

Lay down, I lay me down,
Lay down, I lay me down,
Lay down, I lay me down,
For my soul...

At the roadside I took toll of my times,
In dirty streets I found peace for my soul,
May the merciful be right,
Are you ready for the night,
At the roadside I lay down,
I lay down...

In deep sorrow I took flight with the sun,
From mountains high I gained strength for my soul,
I proved stronger than the test,
When my spirit came to rest,
In deep sorrow I lay down,
I lay down.

The timekeeper's a' knockin', tis all a pitied end.

The Strawbs had been around for a while before Wakeman joined them. At one time, they had a young Sandy Denny in the band, and made an excellent album which wasn't released until many years later (I think possibly after Sandy Denny's death). I first heard them doing Peel sessions on the BBC, just the three of them - two acoustic guitars and a bass, and I once saw that line-up too. The power of some of the songs, and the delivery, was awesome.
Much as I admire Wakeman - he's a fantastic musician (and an even better raconteur!) - somehow when he joined, and the band cranked up to a full rock band line up, I always felt the band lost something. I know it was a good move for them commercially, but they never again seemed to recover that edge.
If you get a chance to listen to the album with Sandy Denny, do! - and if a CD of the BBC Peel sessions ever comes out, I'll be first in the queue!

I always knew of the Strawbs but never knew much about them beyond the obvious hits. But then about twenty years ago I had the radio on as I went to bed and whichever channel it was broadcast them live in concert and I couldn't believe my ears. They sounded great! But I have still never got to see them. If they were playing in Virginia on June 23rd instead of June 24th, I could have slotted them in on the one free day on my upcoming 10 day musical roadtrip of the US. . .

The Reaper from No Earthly Attraction.

Part V The Reaper:

"Senses dead, the time has come
To stop and dwell on ruined time
Wasted wars and selfish pride
Leaving tastes of music wine
Searching useless wasted mind
Reaching for the reapers hand
Lead him from his suicide
Please, is there a Promised Land.
Let me guide your journey long
Leave them while they mourn
We will journey back in time
And you will be reborn
From you I shall take your music
Place it back on earth
You shall witness long its voyage
A music soul rebirth.
Did you see the graves today
With weeds all overgrown
Wilting plants like man to dust
Nowhere life is sown."
