I think the reporter was annoying. Tarantino is right to refuse to answer questions on the basis he's sick of answering the same questions over and over again. It's just lazy journalism.

Interviewer forfeits specific movie discussion in favour of generic (but controversial!) movie violence agenda, fails, then uses a "don't shoot the messenger" defence.

Wouldn't have expected Tarantino to fall for it.

It was pretty generic stuff that Tarantino's been asked before, but it IS topical. And I'm always slightly amused by the fact that film-makers say that ninety minutes of violence has no effect whatsoever on people's behaviour, whereas ad men say "Give me thirty seconds and I'll change how people think about underarm BO for ever!"

Always found him slightly annoying on that he seems to have declared himself one of movie's greats. His films on the whole are good (ignoring the Kill Bill ones) but he is far, far too derivavtive to be classed as a great, in my opinion.

As for this interview I think Tarantino came out alright. He didn't want to answer the question, understandably, he's trying to promote a violent movie at a time when shootings etc are a hot topic and I can understand why he didn't want to end up saying something that would get him in trouble. As soon as the interviewer moved on Tarantino was perfectly pleasant again and willing to answer the next question. Yeah, he did the right thing I think.

I suppose Tarantino is sat there doing interview after interview and didn't pay much attention as to who was next on the list, not really expecting a cavalcade of queries over his movies causing the shooting of children and latenight movie-theatre visitors, which is where it was all heading. It was a tabloidy interview for a subject in which he is meant to say something outrageous, and he did, but not in the way they wanted him to. I can understand his ire.
At the same time, i am not sure Tarantino is really the cause of a debate about the slave trade or that is films of more recent years have the greatest political depth to them. That ego-mad line would mean also that he was the cause of a debate about the Nazis and the Vichy with Basterdss. He does look to mildly outrage with his films alongside making a modernised higher-class version of the crass he fell in love with in the 70s. For me his handling of films has cheapened and relevance to cinema has fallen away. I'll see Django and it may be the rebirth of him, but if it's like everything since Jackie Brown, then i don't hold much hope.

Terrible interview. I normally like Martin Bashir but that came across as clunky and uncomfortable. He didn't look at all like he wanted to be asking half those questions and I get the impression channel 4 insisted upon it.

I agree with the pious comment. He does rather rate himself. I think he was right not to get drawn into a debate about violence but the rhetoric such as "I shut your butt down" makes him look stupid. And yes, the whole slave debate thing is rather self aggrandising. Obviously I have not seen the film but if it's anything like the others in terms of content he'll be hanging his style of revenge and bloodshed on a very obvious subject. Inglourious Basterds was the Nazis and this is slave-masters. Both legitimate targets of revenge but quite a lazy excuse to get the audience on your side and blow a few heads off a the same time. Reservoir dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown all has subtler, more ambiguous targets and allowed the audience to decide who was in the right or wrong. This new one of his looks like an excuse to crack skulls and be self righteous because it's white slave owners who are the target.

Did you watch the right interview? it was Krishnan Guru-Murthy Not Martin Bashir - I thought he handled it very well tbh and Tarrento should know better than to rise to this bate!
