I'd allow once a month a poster randomly selected to choose the wallpaper for NSC for that day. We could have some interesting and challenging scenery. We'd have to make sure some are never selected in order to prevent some pro-BNP spreads, but in general it might make some people feel involved with NSC and get behind the scenes for a minute.

Lots of good stuff here already - I'll deal with responding in full later, but some brief bits...

- I'm aware that help on the site is shit. I know this from the number of 'how do I change my avatar' and similar questions, and the fact this thread has shown many are not aware of thread subscription (a great feature) and NSC Spy (frivolous, but quite useful). So I'll re-vamp help with graphical 'how tos' etc.

- vBookie - there are a few quite hefty vBulletin plugins like vBookie. One I've got my eye on for next season is a predictions one where users would predict Championship scores every week. Unlike past attempts by some honourable NSCers, it drags the match scores down automatically and then re-calculates tables. Little manual effort required so more chance of succeeding. NSC will supply monthly/seasonal prizes etc. vBookie could be used for a competition also.

- Polls about splitting out NSC into Football/Sport and 'Everything else' have always favoured keeping as is. I'm happy to ask the question again and go with the flow.

- I forgot our 'other stuff' forum was still hidden to most people - I'll sort that out tonight.

- And, yes, I'll try and finally resolve smilie-gate tonight too.

That's brilliant! (Teeny tiny flaw - it's miles out of date, as in it starts by showing replies one-by-one from about 10/15 minutes earlier - but not a major complaint once it catches up)

It does that by default as a lot of communities aren't as busy as NSC so, going into Spy, would show you nothing. I might be able to adjust that - I'll look.

Definately this I would love a football only forum and maybe a Lounge for non footy stuff

I see a poll coming up soon, as Bozza hinted at. I would definitely keep it all together though. It's part of NSC really: all the threads, and hence all the users, in one big happy forum.

I'd go for a Rep feature to replace post count

One thing you're certain would make an improvement.

'Football only' forum with a 'general' forum for all things non-football.

One of the best features of NSC is the randomness of the main board, yes have extra's like the Greyhound thread for specific supporters groups as suggested but making the main board football only would sterilise it

Currently there are only about 10 non football threads anyway on the front page, and where would you put the Dog biting a Palace Supporter

The one thing to remember, if you like your NSC all in one place (although look at the home page to see quite a few small fragments now) is that New Posts will give you a complete cross-forum view of all forums you have the permissions to view.

So IF (a big if) stuff was split out, you could still get a similar view to that you have now by using the New Posts view.

I like the idea of having a +1/-1 on individual posts - kind of like a 'like' button, or saying 'this'. Gives a representation people's views of posts. I guess it could lead to a lot of infighting though, and people 'disliking' other peoples' posts because they have argued in the past.

Also, I'd love a prediction league, like the one taybha used to do on 606. I appreciate this takes a lot of effort to organise though...

Have a 'hot' thread feature, so that instead of reading what has been posted most recently, you can see what has proven to be the most read/contributed to in the last hour, this would knock any crap closer to the bottom of the page.

Not keen on football/non-football forums, it's a nightmare to administer, and what would you do with (for example) a thread about Gus which turned into a thread about have you been on holiday in South America.

I think its such a common thing thesedays to have split forums that it really wouldn't sterilise anything. Personally I'd much prefer everything Albion in one place, the rest another. As for moderating it, I think a lax attitude would be fine, doesnt matter if something runs off in a different direction really. Well aware that people have consistantly voted against it though so not expecting any changes.

Personally, I'd get rid of signatures, rid of "mentioned" and "tagged" in a persons profile box on the left, maybe post counts too.

Alot of forums I've seen have a 'Chant section' , so instead of taking up the page full of song suggestions we could just have an area on the board for people to suggest songs.

The Guardian's messageboards allow a recommendation (or a +1), but not a -1. Several benefits really:

1) Stops the infighting that you hint at
2) Stops a brilliant but divisive post from netting down to 0, separating them out from posts that are just generally crap or irrelevant.

Might be worth a thought here if we were going to introduce the feature at all...?

Yeah that is a good idea, it works well on the Guardian website.

It's more WORK though, isn't it? Can't just have a cheeky refresh to see what's going on - you have to do TWO. I'm not sure I can handle that.

I don't like the idea of splitting forums, it makes things much more complicated. When I've gone to visit other teams' forums that have this implimented, I'm never quite sure where I should be looking, as sometimes they have different sections for transfers, matchdays, rumours, away fans etc. Too many posts could belong in multiple sections, and may be overlooked or difficult to find. Also, it makes it a lot harder for new users who haven't grasped how things work. And then they post on the wrong section, and get ridiculed by everyone (as would surely happen on here) and possibly never come back.

I'd also be against too much restriction on new posters, as some great posts come from opposition fans (eg some of the Posh fans today about CMS) who only want to post once and would be put off by having to wait a day or so to post.
