you are almost certainly going to get surcharged thanks to the government increasing Air Passenger Duty. £20.00 pp for all long haul flights. £5-10 for all shorthaul

Sorry if fixtures but that could be a big additional cost that families should be aware of. ABTA tour operators have to absorb 2% increases the rest will probably get passed on as well

If you are not surcharged, you may well find that the airline will collect it when you check in

from 1/2/07 ...

Yes forgot to mention that it only applies to flights from 01 Feb anything booked after 17 Dec should already include the additional tax though

Anything booked before 17 December departing on or after 01 Feb and it is likely you will get charged even if the ticket is paid and issued.

From an insiders point of view it was expected which is why few airlines are doing much about fighting it, many are actually quite pleased that it wasn't more, after all it was CUT by Brown from £10 to £5 about 5 years or so ago.

It WILL however be a logistical nightmare to collect at airports as the only way many handling agents will be able to collect the tax is if you take your original booking form and there is talk of it being illegal unless they can give you a reciept which many wont be able to do, so if you booked with say Ryanair last year for a flight after 1st Feb BEFORE he announced the tax you are very likely going to have to join a massive que at the airport to pay your extra £5.

I've heard mutterings about check in staff taking industrial action unless things are clarified as there is going to be a lot of angry confrontations unless the Govt clarify things fast.

Good tax - if it goes to the right place of course, for the intended use - which it won't...but ho hum...

Sorry I fail to see how taxes of over £130.00 total for a return flight to the USA is a good thing. Especially when you consider that the basic cost of the flight at the moment is about £160.00. The tax will soon be more than the ticket :nono:

Arse, another £40 to find next month. Still, thanks to Bozza's top tips that's still less than £350 for 2 returns to NY. Not complaining.

Good. People have to realise that cheap air travel is the biggest contributer to pollution in the atmosphere and has to be curbed. Otherwise we are all f***ed in the long run, simple as.

In the USA, air travel contributes 2.7% of their total greenhouse gas emissions - and only 10% of their total transport-related emissions.
