i think it would depend on what for. they are known to dislike drug offenses, but if its for firearms you'll probably find yourself at the front of the que.

if they're just cautions I'm not sure they can be traced, I think they say actual convictions, I've got 2 out of those three and didnt mention it (I know I said not to hide it but didnt know it was cautions)

(though it was just a connecting flight, I think it works the same though)

you need to apply for a visa in advance from the US embassy- he will not be eligible for the visa waiver programme

The drug possession may be something of a stumbling block. Probably best to contact the US Embassy and ask them directly, giving details of exactly what the convictions are and when they occured.

In theory, you would need to apply for a visa to enter, as you would not be able to get in under the Visa Waiver scheme that most tourists from the UK use. The US Embassy would then decide whether they want to issue you one or not, based on the particular offence(s).

In practice...and I'm not giving you advice one way or the other!...the US Immigration officials at the border points do not have access to the UK criminal record database, so unless you were on the FBI's Most Wanted list, or Interpol's list of individuals who are of particular concern, they're unlikely to find out about someone's conviction for pissing in a bin in 1992, for example.

Put it this way, some people with convictions tick No in the bit on the Visa Waiver forms where it asks if you've been in trouble with the law, and get away with it. On the other hand, it's a legal declaration, so if you do do that, and then for whatever reason they do discover you've been a bit naughty in the past, you'll probably be denied entry to the US forever.

In theory yes. I was, sorry, 'a mate' was meant to be going to Vegas and had a similar problem. I was asking around because I wasn't sure but a mate said he knew someone who went to New York two months after getting out of prison, no problem getting in at all. This would back up what Edna has said.

What would you know about the US, if you haven't been there?
Not that there are not interesting and fascinating places in Europe - but then you could ask the same question of those if you haven't been to them.

I've been to Florida, LA and San Francisco.
