Any player will only be as good as the manager, assuming they play for the team . . . So . . .

Gascgoine - Robson

Moore - Ramsay

Linekar - Robson

Midfield- We have some pretty good midfielders now. But Beckham and Bryan Robson
Forward- Kane wouldn't need replacing.

I'd probably bring back Adams.

Rio Ferdinand

Could both play the modern game and be an instant upgrade on anyone in our defence

Lineker, every time.

I loved him, he was brilliant. And I think Kane is massively over rated.

:lolol:

Bob the retired social worker, my telly football chum, and Liverpooltastic red, has repeatedly told me that Kane is overrated. Every time he misses and, especially, every time he scores against Liverpool.

I recon he is class, but he lacks the charisma and majesty of the primo Beckham, fresh out of Rebecca Loos, and onto the pitch for 110% influence and impact

Over my 20 years of watching football there has only been one player I could say would be a starter in any team in the world and that is Ashley Cole.

But I think England is in more need of a high-quality central midfielder as you currently have 0. And from those 20 years the obvious choice would be Paul Scholes.

You are right about Cole. Even in our ‘golden generation’ team, he was the only player who would have got in all other nations teams. And the only one who would have got in the Spain side of 2008-2012 era who for me are the greatest international side ever.

I think a myth has developed over the years about Scholes though. Quality player but I don’t think he was quite as good as subsequently made out, mainly because of that Xavi quote. I watched them both a hell of a lot during the time and I would take Gerrard over Scholes everyday as one example.

My Scholes opinion is usually as popular as my Zidane was over rated and Rooney peaked at 18 ones though! [emoji23]

The Scholes international myth, I agree, is based on Sven titting around with all the midfield riches. Shunting Scholes around, then we flopped in tournaments, so hey presto “We didn’t win because of the mistreatment of world class Scholes”.

I think Sven should’ve stuck to specialists in their proper position.

Ledley King (or similar when he was injured) as the DM.
Gerrard as the marauding no 8 driving England forward.
Scholes beside him in his best position, there for his passing game.

Lampard should’ve missed out.

Agree. Not necessarily about Lampard missing out, but Gerrard was shunted around to try and fit everybody in far more than Scholes.

Ashley Cole over Terry Cooper? Not a chance! Ray Wilson probably ahead of him too.

England missed a trick by not playing him as sweeper and building the team around him. He was wasted in a flat back four.

We could then have played Gerrard and Lampard together in midfield without worrying about a defensive midfielder.

It would have worked!

I think Mick Channon and Malcolm McDonald would be ideal for Southgate. Just hoof the ball upfield and forget even trying to play more the intricate football which is completely beyond the Palace goon’s capability
