As I remember it, Raya had 12 months left on his contract and wouldn't sign a new one so Brentford wanted a sale. Arsenal had already spent big money so couldn't pay the fee being discussed but Raya wanted the move and presumably nobody else was interested. The agreement was that Raya would sign a 1 year contract extension to protect his market value, but move on loan to Arsenal for a £3m initial fee and £27m in the summer of 2024. Ultimately, Brentford got the price they wanted, Arsenal got the player they wanted and Raya got the move he wanted - plus Brentford got to play against Ramsdale for both games.I didn't know about this, but it would seem to make sense. I guess not just buying him outright last season was down to FFP or some accounting shenanigans?
