Help needed. I have, in a drunken moment, offered to make a birthday cake. Is there any way of cheating with the piping of the wording like using a stencil or similar as I have never piped wording but dont want to use the stick on happy birthday signs. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can get icing pens, pens that write straight on to Icing. You can either use the to write your message, or use them to write the message, then ice over them.

EDIT: That's assuming there is a layer of rolled icing on top of the cake, I suppose.

If no rolled icing layer, would edible paper be an option? Ice on to edible paper, then lift the paper onto the cake? (can cut out the words first, place them on the cake then ice?)

1) Go to Tesco,or similar of your choice.

2) Buy appropriate birthday cake, ready iced and inscribed.

3) Take home and remove from box.

4) Kick it around the kitchen a bit to remove shop bought appearance.

5) Place on that chipped Coronation cake plate in the bottom of the cupboard.

6) Take applause.

7) Serve, taking care to report that you had some earlier.

I can see the sense in doing that but I WANT to make it but am or was a little dubious and concerned about the icing but that seems to have been overcome.
