For anyone interested, Ian Wright was on The Danny Baker Show and talked briefly about being turned down by Chris Cattlin. He mentions players like Grealish, Case Digweed and Ramsey. The podcast is available here:

Unless my memory is playing tricks, I dont think IW played against Wilkins in his trial because Wilkins didn't join us until Barry Lloyd got the job and we had dropped down to the third tier with Sunderland for the first time since the top flight days. Catlin was manager before that. We also turned down Roy Keane. Now that wouldn't have been too shabby, Roy Keane in midfield with Wright up front. Never mind, we had Richard Tiltman instead and you can't normally buy such comedy.

Wilkins was at the Albion originally in 1983.. then learnt his trade abroad (and a stint at Orient), before signing again, this time under Barry Lloyd

Wright played in the reserves in 1984. But was not rated by Cattlin who preferred Ian Muir as back up.

Reminds me of a time when I met a girl at University. Chatting away with her and the conversation gets onto football. 'who do you support?' she asks. 'brighton' I say. 'wow, really...my cousin plays for them'. Now I was getting quite excited at this stage....who is this babe who is related to a bha player? 'what's his name?'
You can guess the rest can't you.....never really went anywhere after that as I tried to backtrack from saying that Richard Tiltman was the worse player to ever wear the stripes.
