One of my boyhood heroes. What a double act him and Wardy were! So sad. Rest in peace, Spider.

That’s incredibly sad news Spider and Ward formed an unbelievable partnership

1974/1975 season on a Tuesday night Brighton played Walsall In the old division three, it’s one of the games that remains such a vivid memory on that night Peter Ward scored four goals while lan Mellor scored three leaving Brighton top of the Third Division.

Ian Mellor and Peter Ward were electrifying the then Brighton manager Alan was quoted as saying : “I have never seen finishing quite like that. Both lads were tremendous. It was the most magnificent second half of football I’ve ever seen.”

They were magical together you expected goals when they were both playing in all my years watching they were the best number 10 and 8 partnership

Very sad news it genuinely has brought a tear to my eyes rest in peace Spider and thank you thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends plus all of us

R.I.P. Spider.

An important player who helped the Albion on their journey to the old First Division, playing partner of Peter Ward, a genuine club legend.

Such sad news.

My NSC username reflects one of the best (half) games of football that I saw at The Goldstone.

His partnership with Wardy goes down as (IMO) probably the best striking partnership The Albion has ever had (certainly in my lifetime)

RIP Spider.
If I remember correctly, Wardy's 4th goal was when Spider hit the post and Wardy knocked in the rebound. It could so easily have been Mellor 4 Ward 3 in that mad 29 minutes.

Totally agree with this and think the weather wasn’t great!
If my memory is correct, one of Wardies goals was after a shot from Spider that hit the post. Could easily have been Mellor 4 Ward 3!

RIP

Mellor could read Wardy like a book as in what he was going to do next, and what is a book without a reader.
RIP Spider

Everyone is talking about the game against Walsall - quite rightly as it was a magical (if soaking wet) night. But there were other great games: we scored seven a couple of weeks before the Walsall game. I can't remember who it was against but Spider was on fire that day.

And he also scored a great goal against Derby at the Baseball Ground. This was when Derby were one of England's best team but for 10 minutes or so, it looked we could get a draw against them,

Spider was a magical player. He had a really sharp footballing brain and no little skill. I'm still in shock that he's gone

Thank you, Spider, for some great memories, the most vivid of which is that second half against Walsall in the pouring rain. A match that will be talked about forever.

A great foil to Wardy in those glorious years of my mid-teens. So sad to hear of your passing.
