I would say Compaq/HP (the same company now) but Dells are cheaper and pretty cheerful.

Buy a Mac only if you have enough money to pay for an overrated machine and don't mind being restricted on what software you can use. Also, buy a car so you can drive to you favourite Apple Store if it needs repairing.
