I love Sheffield Wednesday. Great club, great fans, great ground.

It has to be 1983. Roy Hattersley described the disappointment of losing against a team whose support were something like "antique-dealers and bon-viveurs".

We went there in hope to enjoy the day. They went there in expectation. Happy day.

I also did enjoy Kazim-Richards header a couple of seasons back.

Unlike their fellow countrymen up north in Leeds I've always found Wednesday fans to be a decent bunch. Unlike Leeds (who they are clearly as big as) they don't have any delusions of grandeur.

FA Cup semi-final, 1983. Glorious sunny day, 54,000 packed into Highbury, and Jimmy Case's thunderbolt hurtles towards my head. Thought he was going to break the net. Fond memories of a ten-year-old.

I have a very hazy memory of this one too, can't remember all that much apart from the fact that we were utterly outclassed but I think we knew it and thus took it quite well. Would Danny Wilson have been playing for Wednesday at that point or am I imagining it?

Just dug out an old programme from that game October 3rd 1990, Att 10,379
Sheff Wed team as back of programme was as follows
1 Kevin Pressman
2 Roland Nilsson
3 Phil King
4 Nigel Pearson (capt)
5 Peter Shirtliff
6 Danny Wilson
7 John Sheridan
8 Carlton Palmer
9 Nigel Worthington
10 David Hirst
11 Paul Williams
12 Trevor Francis
14 Steve McCall
A lot of future managers in that line-up.
Our average home gate that season was only about 8,000. Surprising that considering it was a promotion chasing season to the top league that ended in the play-off final defeat.

Here & there
My 1st trip to hillsborough was (I think) 75/76 and it was a 3-3 draw with neil Martin scoring 2 for us. I think it was the opening game of the season and Albion played in green.

It was a treat to go to a 'big club' and I stood on the open Kop. Wednesday had a big electronic scoreboard, an unusual site for div 3 back then, and some of the biggest cheers were for the updates as Blades lost 5-1 at Man Utd.

All my other trips to Hillsborough were rather dull.

I was there for that one too. I think Wednesday got the equaliser in the last minute. We sat in the big stand opposite the dug outs with the Wednesday fans. They were ok to us when they realised we were Albion fans no trouble at all.

Good luck this season apart from the two games against us lot!

Of course the semi-final is the one that sticks in the memory. I recall the 4-0 but had forgotten that it was SW.

A bit of circularity for me now as we leaf through junior TRHK's AS results. Was heading towards my own A levels that sunny Summer (1983). Staggering to think that I now have two kids of my own of roughly the same age. Nothing seemed more important to me that day than beating the bouyant, but lower league, opposition. Just rambling, apologies.

The 4-0

Our scorers were Nigel Pearson, John Sheridan, Paul Williams and Danny Wilson, the side was a cut above that division and only the cup runs stopped us walking away with it, we backlogged to 4 games in 7 days towards the end of the season and were playing most midweeks due to replays in both cups.

I remember you lot coming to S6 and getting a draw in the return game, John Byrne I think, and i reckon that was the last time there was 4 clubs promoted to the top flight, although i could be wrong.

Have a safe journey up tomorrow

Three games stand out for me. The 1st in 1976ish, an end of season evening game at the Goldstone. The crowd must have been around 30,000. We needed to win to get promotion to the second division. Eric Potts scored for Wednesday but we went on to win reasonably comfortably and get promoted.

1977
Weds scored in the first minute, Wardy missed a pen just after HT. We won 3-2

My mate went to that Oldham game.He said there was some trouble and it was snowing. That's all i remember of that.

Hate to be picky but had you gone up in 90/91 you would have been promoted to Division 1. 91/92 season was the last Div 1 season. Premiership started in 92/93.

That was 90/91 mate.
We finished 3rd in Div 2 behind West Ham and Oldham.

Anyhoo, thanks to all who have offered to answer questions, got a fair few replies.

I'l post the questions in here as well when I get the replies from the guys that responded, then I'll post the replies from here on our messageboard.

I actually went to the Sheff Wed v Oldham game that season as I was a student in Nottingham.

35,000 in the ground, Leppings Lane still tarpaulined over. :(
Finished 2-2, and we couldn't get on your Kop because it was full so we were in the main stand.

Some fit yummy mummy in front of us kept jumping up every time Wednesday went forward and the bloke behind us shouted "SIT DOWN OR I'LL LICK YOUR CLIT". She sat down.

We came from 2-0 down that day although how we ever found ourselves behind I'll never know, we hit the woodwork 3 times and Haworth made about 3 top class saves before Currie and Henry scored for Oldham, 2 second half Shez pens and we almost nicked it late on through Dany Wilson
