since there’s obviously been some less than positive discussion recently about FH’s coaching ability, i thought i’d just highlight something that really impressed me with the new manager re his in-game management: his subs.

first two games of the season, brought on adingra who made either a match-winning or victory-solidifying contribution on both occasions, subbing on pervis yesterday totally changed the game as it gave mitoma extra freedom, and even last week, subbing on igor helped stabilise the defence. really seems to be able to have a positive impact with his changes, something i don’t think we’ve seen here for a while, given RDZ’s subs were often an extension of plan A and GP’s subs would often involve a striker playing at wing-back.

It’s a real positive. Now we need to see an improvement in his plan from the start of the game.

Agreed. Made the change needed to free Mitoma. Not only was Ferdi out of position or muscled off too often, he can’t hit a line ball with his left (or won’t).

Which again begs the question why a left footed left back wasn’t bought as back up to Estupinan, or why Barco wasn’t kept for that role.

Barco is a weird one, he looked good imho..... and hes not getting starts for Sevilla right now either. Would've better on our bench than theirs.

You’d have to ask Bloom and the recruitment team. Ferdi was excellent in the Euros but he’s not quite as good a right back as Velts, not as good a left back as Pervinho and not as 10-ish as Georginho or Pedro. He’s a player for all positions and none.

It does seem that way, doesn’t it. Although it is early. And I imagine he’s a much better attacking right back than Velts.

His substitutions have made impacts. This is part reflects tactical acumen and the ability to adapt. It in part reflects that he have good options and in part is due to luck.

Like with most players who can play a number of positions, you always wonder if they would be better off picking one and excelling at it

He doesnt have the physicality of either Veltman or Pervis either. Doesnt look like it will take much to muscle him off the ball.

That said its super early, second half of this season or next will give a better indication. PL is a lot harder test than Turkeys Süper Lig

Also. His subs are hard to predict when & his many. Potter & de zerbi always seemed to be premeditated. Whears FH seems to be doing it on the fly based on what's occuring

i think he’s definitely best suited at wing back when we’d be playing a back three. stating the obvious by saying that we need to invest in the defence, but we do need to by some specialist wide centre backs who can really defend channels and wide spaces well. lots of pace and physicality. then, i think we’ll be really able to unlock ferdi’s potential

Imo I think he's been a little too careful with the subs and could have changed more earlier on a couple of occasions. But very happy with the impact the subs have had in general.

Brave changes yesterday, not least bringing off Ferdi at half time for the benefit of the team. Not afraid to make the tough calls.

There were several occasions when he was caught out of position and left us exposed.
Bournemouth away is one example I can remember.
I think he may well be a better attacking wide midfielder than full back.

Good observation. Whereas Pervis can, and does. Last season, he and Mitoma formed a potent partnership.

First half Ferdi and hinshelwood gave kulusevski too much space , with the high line that left us exposed time and again on the left. FH found a solution to the problem. That says to me he can become a top manager.
