You could also state that a league is set up for all teams to play the same amount of games in a season, however if you are in a play-off position you then enter a separate knock-out competition, a competition that has a reward of being promoted to the the next league if you win that. Your league position does not change after any play off results so cannot be classed as a standard league game

Edit:

To add to that, Stevenage finished 6th last year but went up, they did not get classed as finshing 4th

What? Are the league giving them some sort of trophy for this achievment then?

No but I assume they will do a plaque or some such tat

It's a great achievement however you dress it up.

I do think though that there is a real danger of this record being their 'elephant in the room'.

Don't you mean 'albatross'?

After all, plenty of people are talking of their record.
