What a farce this has become - and what a glaring examole of lack of co-ordinated thinking when it comes to railways in this country. The only way this stub (as many are rightly calling it) would make any sense would be if at the southern end it connected to HS1 so that HS services culd run (at high speed all the way) from Birmingham direct to Paris and Brussels.
The service could be extended north of Birmingham on existing tracks - north of Birmingham platform length would be a problem, but the trains could be split at Birmingham, half to Manchester and half to Leeds and Newcastle - still at speeds of 70-90 mph. Sir Edward Watkins' dream finally realised!

The northerners are gonna love those HS2 trains entering their region at 20th century pace.

A reminder of what could have been every time a train arrives...

Yesterday the Tory levelling up dream died

HS2 will not be extended to Euston unless enough private investment is secured, it has been reported.

While cancelling HS2 to Manchester this week, Rishi Sunak pledged to extend the high-speed railway to the central London station.

But PA Media, citing a No 10 source, reported the promise was contingent on a substantial proportion of the cost being met by private funds. If not enough money is found, HS2 will permanently stop at Old Oak Common in the capital’s western suburbs.

I think he's just been pondering what the sunk cost is of those 'spades in the ground' ...😬
Well I'm glad someone has made a decision, if it was left to Sunak we'd still be considering the options after both me and him are long gone. It's his f***ing decision FFS

When he said 'pledge' he meant this:

He's so excited about the general election he needs to wipe his wood.

It’s embarrassing that we as a country seem totally incapable of doing something other comparable countries can do with their eyes closed

Just a note.

For the media to attack the pre-filmed video made by the PM is a mute point and in reality highly hypocritical.

Anyone who works in TV knows pre-filmed content to be used (or not used) dependent on a future event has been part and parcel of TV News for decades.

I used to run a tape library for MTV and had a Frank Sinatra thing ready to go for weeks before he died.

The real issue is that wasn't declared to Parliament first, but this lot gave up on that level of scrutiny years ago.

The other issue being that the media focussed on the video (non) story and the (non) conspiracy rather than the parliamentary scrutiny issue.
