How much money should I spend on a decent suit?

Righty ho folks,

I have recently been offered my first position in management for another comapany in a similar sector to the one I currently work in. With that in mind I have decided that I need to somewhat sharpen my work wardrobe to include a couple of decent suits.

So, my question to all the NSC suit experts, is how much should I be loking to spend and where is best to go? I guess my current effort from 'suits you' isn't good enough for a management type. Should I be looking at Marks and Sparks, or should I be looking more upmarket?

Before you all start to mention shops in Brighton, I would be doing my shopping in Birmingham. But any broad advice would be well recieved.

Depends, can get some decent suits for around the £120-150 mark, but they won't last if you are wearing them day in day out.

If your going to Brimingham get yourself in the Bull Rung and hit Selfridges for starters, but just have a look around, it would depend on what style your after and what your budget is.

You dont really need to go to Birmingham, there are some good shops in Wolves that would sort you out nicely.

You'll probably score a few brownie points with the missus if you go to Brum though!

I thought you were a student?!

I was when I first started posting on NSC, and after that I was Vice-President of a Students' Union for 2 years, which is basically getting paid to live a student lifestyle! But, sadly, I have a proper job these ays.

Too true.

so, let me get this straight. you're going into management but you have to ask on an internet football message board how much to spend on a suit?

I literally know nothing about suits, owing mostly to working in places with a dress-down type ethic. Pathetic, I know. I also I was sort-of looking for more generic suity type advice, but didn't word it well.

Anyways, thanks for all the advice so far - it would be safe to say I know about as much about suits as I do about advanced fluid dynamics. My current suit is a suits you cheepy one, that I had taken in by a 'make and mend' lady - so it looks fitted, but in fact was a lot cheaper (this was because I was a fatty student when I bought the suit, but am not a slimline non-student).

I tend to head to Moss Bross, allthough their hire suits are junk, the ones to buy are pretty decent. If it's going to get a lot of wear- grab a second pair of trousers....

I got a nice whistle from Burton for 150. But then you need to think about the shoes.

Ties and shirt sets you can pick up from George at Asda for like 3 quid.

If you like getting static shocks from your shirt & ties!

Used to be that £500 was what you'd pay for a good suit but M&S actually do great work suits from £150 ish, just get 2 pairs of trousers with each one & that way you'll be able to afford a couple of suits at least. That's what I do anyway.

Do NOT though spend less than £150 otherwise they start to look cheap & nasty before too long, I think the last one I got from M&S was 189 & they did a deal on the 2nd pair of trousers. I sound cheap now!

I recommend Slaters menswear (there is one in Brum), decent range and value but best of all is the well informed and old fashioned style service that you get from the staff in there.
