How much money does the club get when we watch them away?

I've a feeling this may have changed over the years. It is my belief now that the away team does get a share of the gate receipts. Is that right?

If so, how does it work? Is it just a fixed percentage of the total crowd, or is it related to number of fans in the "away" sections (or only to those who bought tickets officially through their own club). If so, do we get all the money from tickets sold to our own fans when they travel away, or a percentage of that?

Basically, if I pay £20 to go and watch the Albion away, do the club get any of that money?

They get nothing - which is why I'm cutting down on my away matches to pay for my contribution to the Save-The-Albion fund. Still going to Sunderland, though.

Is it really nothing? I thought I read somwhere it was 50% for FA cup games, and 10% for League games. I also remember us being listed as one of Chesterfield's creditors a few years ago for unpaid share of gate receipts.

I'm sure you're right. Did I imagine the above, or was it different a few years ago?

It's only cup games where the away club gets a percentage of the gate money.

Nothing for league games.

Not quite true.

If Albion (or any club) sell tickets for away games they are entitled to charge the home club 5% commission on all tickets sold.

Every little bit helps.

Back in the 70s, we used to get large crowds and away teams used to benefit from a share of the gate money.

Of course, now that we are saddled with Withdean the rules have changed and we don't get diddly squat from aways. I'm sure Leeds aren't fussed about getting a share of our home game.

Cup games are different. If we could get a draw at Man U it would be a nice little earner for the club!

Yes, but that's not profit. The club has to pay the staff to issue the tickets.

That's also true, but most clubs do not employ staff just to sell away tickets - they'll have other duties.

The point is, if you're going to buy a ticket for an away match you might as well do via your own club and let them collect some income, albeit small, from the process. :)

As has been said we get NO share of the away gate for League games although we can charge the home club a 'handling fee' for selling tickets basically on their behalf.

It didn't used to be like this. Right up until the late 70s or early 80s away clubs used to get about 30%. This was stopped by the big clubs (Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U, Spurs and Everton. Yes younger readers Spurs and Everton were once considered big clubs). This was the first flexing of their muscles that would eventually lead to the Premier League, they basically demanded that they be allowed to keep all their home income for themselves. The League agreed but like Danegeld it wasn't enough to keep the greedy bastards happy.
