I agree with your assessment of Brown and Darling's handling of the financial crisis. They have mostly taken the right decisions with the odd exception (the VAT cut) and the economy seems to be on the mend.

So I think that Brown is desperately hoping that the upturn rescues him because nothing else will. Trouble is everyone has simply had enough of the miserable bastard, the same fate as befell Thatcher.

They were not geniuses for fixing a global catastrophe. The solution? Put the country in a record level of debt to paper over their mismanagement and failure to see the tell-tale signs of economic trouble.
