I think he's changing at Clapham then Gatwick.

Or would it be easier to get a train to Southampton which I'm assuming then goes through Worthing?
If he comes from Clapham/Gatwick, then the free zone starts at Haywards Heath.

I’m afraid I don’t know which route would be easier/quickest/cheapest.

Why would anyone have to change at Gatwick? Doesn't the Brighton train stop at Clapham Junction anymore?

The dull part of the south coast
Asking for a Dorset based friend who's planning on getting the train
Worthing is the furthest west for free train travel with a match ticket. It is, however, slightly redundant as I travel from Southampton to Brighton (return) on match days and the fare is exactly the same to Worthing as it is to Brighton - £14.10 with a railcard.

Depending where your friend lives in Dorset his best route would be a train to Southampton on South Western Railway and change for the Southern service direct to Brighton which takes around 1 hour 45 minutes. There are two trains an hour on this route.

If there is engineering works on the Southern route, with the usual shenanigans of bus replacement jobs, I will go on South Western to Clapham Junction then change for Southern to Brighton. You can then change at East Croydon for Thameslink if you wish. The fare is more expensive but the overall journey will be around 2 hours, so a reasonable alternative. Again, there is no real benefit in using your match ticket for a reduced fare if you go to Haywards Heath - the furthest north for the club’s travel zone. Hope this helps.
