I never like the contrived insincere friendliness of "Hi". If a personal mail normally "Hello xxxxx" as I would in conversation. To a firm I start "Dear"......I am traditional.

I hate firms that call me by my first name, I know it is a ploy to get me to think they are friendly when they just want my money. I have been known to reply" It is Mr xxxx" to you!

Ok , I am a crusty old fxxxx sometimes.....

Can't stand this personally. Think it just comes across so rude and unnecessary. Good manners cost nothing as my old Nana used to say!

The formality all depends on the recipient but some form of greeting should be used before the name (whether it be Dear, Hello, Hi or Good Morning/Afternoon) in my opinion. Hate the way that so many businesses think you have to act defensive/aggressive in order to get your way or simply play Mr Big Important Bollocks.

I don't even bother with the recepient's name. Just straight to the message.

Alternatively.... "Oi, you, yes you."
