Okay, stuff like football, rugby, athletics, tennis etc are OBVIOUSLY sports.
But at the fringes there is stuff like golf, snooker, darts, bowls etc. Are these really 'sports', or simply pastimes?

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is some intangible element of high competition, skill and drama which I think can compensate for, say, lack of athletic prowess required and still constitute sport.

If anyone has watched and got into a great darts or snooker final, they will understand that.

But I accept that by my own definition things like cards and dominoes probaby qualify, which I wouldn't include, so there must be a better one.

I used to throw 2 crane flies into a spiders web & see which one escaped/got squished first.

But spiders are greedy fuckers & would quickly squish the second one before it could break free.

Now that IS sport.

BTW this was about 30 years ago - I was an angelic 8 yesr old, otherwise....... ;)

id say something that you can play competitively but then again tiddleywinks could be classed into that so ermm :lolol:
I used to live in the same house as three members of the English international tiddlywinks team.

If sport can be defined as an activity where a governing body will pay for players to have a free trip to America to represent their country, tiddlywinks is, indeed, a sport.

Sport has to include physical competitiveness and other 'sports' such as golf, darts, are skills and not sports.

I respect the outstanding mental and technical skill of Phil Taylor but he is NOT a sportsman, he is a 'skillsman'.

I reckon anyway...

I looked up the word sport in the dictionary coz this thought also came acros my mind. It said something like:

"Sport is a competitive activty where competitors/teams copete against each other in order to win prizes,OFTEN involving physical contact."

Make of that what you will.:)

I always beleived that it was only a proper sport if you had to change footwear to participate.

Okay, so lets go with that definition.

Skiing: in!
Darts: out!
