How can I get to Stansted for cheap?

Booked a nice cheap holibobs for me and the mrs recently but blinded by super cheap air fares I made the rookie error of choosing ANY LONDON airport as my departure point which meant the dirt cheap flights I got (£15 a pop) are actually leaving from Stansted.

Getting there from Brighton on the train will cost £40 each way and even more if I take a National Express coach. I even looked at deals from Gatwick thinking there'd be some discounted inter airport service, but the prices are still exorbitant.

Is there any way of getting to the airport without paying up to three times the cost of our flights?

Leaving mid July

when i went to sweden via stansted i got the national express from victoria......if you book it far enough in advance you can get £5 singles...it's usually £10 singles i think

there's also a company called "terravision" which does cheap coaches from victoria (i think they go from that weird "other" coach station in between the train station and the proper coach station) i didn't go for it because i lost patience with the website...it was a couple of quid cheaper than the national express though from memory (and a little bit quicker because it doesn't stop as much)

one thing with coach travel though is obviously that traffic etc. is completely out of your control.....i was stuck in a mega jam somewhere in east london and was panicking my tits off....so remember to leave plenty of extra time

I've looked up the airport buses and they're £40 a seat, each way.

I do drive but I don't have a car.

Started looking into car hire. Pick up Brighton or Gatwick, drop off at Stansted - looks cheaper than public transport, which is RIDICULOUS frankly. Anyone got any tips for good car hire deals?

Funnily enough we're off to Sweden too. I cannot find ANY cheap National Express tickets. Just a standard £40 fare which I just can't stomach paying. The train is about the same price although we'd have to change about 3 times, including a cross London jaunt on the tube.

GRRRR. They don't make this easy do they?

Have you tried ALL the cheap train ticket websites?

And also, check out ticket prices by breaking up the journey. You might remember that thread I started a couple of weeks ago where I broke up London to York into two pieces and saved about a tenner on a £31 ticket.

I do remember said thread BUT I don't remember enough helpful advice on how to play the railways game. Apart from thetrainline.com I know not where to look to get me decent priced tickets. And thetrainline has NOTHING cheap.

give terravision a go.......I must've got lucky with national express, their cheaper fares do sell out quickly (especially in summer....i went out of "season" a couple of months ago)
