According to Uefa, head to head scores are worked out before goal difference.

According the BBC and other sites' Group A as it stands, Greece are now 2nd - leading Russia 1-0, EVEN THOUGH they lost the to the Czechs who are on the same points.

Can someone explain what's going on? I REALLY don't understand.

Just pulled this off the UEFA website

Final group rankings
To avoid doubt, and in order to ensure that the criteria related to the direct confrontation between the teams remaining equal in points after the group phase are reapplied, the UEFA Executive Committee decided at its meeting in Istanbul on 20 March 2012 to amend paragraph 8.07 of the Regulations of the UEFA European Football Championship 2010–12 as follows – in particular the new clause d) shown in bold:

"If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:
a) Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;
b) Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question;
c) Higher number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question;
d) If, after having applied criteria a) to c), two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria a) to c) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine the final rankings of the two teams. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria e) to i) apply in the order given;
e) superior goal difference in all group matches;
f) higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
g) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see annex I, paragraph 1.2.2);
h) fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
i) drawing of lots"

Exactly. a) Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question. Head to head. But this isn't happening as far as I can see.

Something to do with Russia beating Czech 4-1

That goal has changed the dynamics in Group A, leaving Russia and Greece going through. Those two and the Czech's all have four points, but Russia's 4-1 win over the Czechs means the goal difference is weighted against Michal Bilek's side. It means the Czech's cannot sit back now in the second half in Wroclaw, while Poland will be even more desperate for a goa

At the time you posted Greece were beating Russia and Czech Republic were drawing with Poland leaving Greece, Russia and Czech Rep all on 4 pts. To work out the group standings you eliminate the result against Poland for each team and just look at the points they picked up in the games against each other.

Russia 4 CR 1
Greece 1 CR 2
Greece 1 Russia 0

Russia win the group with 3 pts and +2 gd
Greece second with 3 pts and level gd
Czech Republic with 3 pts and -2 gd

Although as Czech Republic won and finished on 6pts the only head to head result that matters is the one between Russia and Greece.

In the case of the Dutch that isn't true. If they beat Portugal and Germany beat Denmark then you'll have 3 teams tied on 3 points. The results between those 3 will decide on who finishes second (the result of the games against Germany will be irrelevant).

Denmark have beaten the Dutch (1-0) but lost to Portugal (3-2) meaning they'd have 3 points and a level GD
Portugal have the win against Denmark but will have lost to the Dutch meaning at best they will also have a level GD and 3 pts.
Netherlands have lost to Denmark but will beat Portugal meaning they will have 3pts and at worse a level GD.

The number of goals in the Netherlands vs Portugal game would be key to working out who goes through. 1-0 to the Dutch would see Portugal through on goals scored. The Dutch need to win big to have any real chance of going through, I think they need to score at least 2 more than Portugal to have any chance.
