Hi NSCers,

Our community has been having some very dubious behaviour from strangers, today and the last few weeks. It has heightened my desire to look into home security.

Other than the usual CCTV, locks etc, do any NSCers have other tips that work well for home security?

Installation depends on the size of your house. We’ve got door, window & movement sensors and a panic switch and it cost about £1,000 from memory, but that was 10 years ago. Monthly monitoring subscription if £40, which includes all maintenance, servicing etc. A temporary fault set off the panic alarm one day and the Police were here in 5 minutes, although there is no local police station.

Still think a dog would be cheaper.

I have an electronic locking system. All windows and doors are electronically locked at night or when I leave during the day. If someone were to be aware of my electronic locks and cut the electricity to the house, the backup generator kicks in. Theoretically, there is about a 5 second window of opportunity to force the door in that time.

Alternatively, you could just smash the window but that would be a bit of a giveaway.

Never had a dog, but grew up with German Shepard’s as my mum n dad had them. My mates were shit scared of them. So a good deterrent.

The excellent Swedish company Verisure are growing fast in the UK. Their smart system costs £42 per month I think, with a low installation cost. It covers 24/7 response and they communicate with occupiers by speaker in the event of a possible incident. Photo detectors throughout film incidents.

£40 p.m. is the sort of sum that you'd expect to pay for the company's own staff to attend. As they are relying on the vagaries of a police response , I think you are being ripped off. Also, police stations tend to be staffed by civilians nowadays. A patrol car is much more likely to be diverted than an officer jumping in a vehicle at the cop shop.

Also, police stations tend to be staffed by civilians nowadays. A patrol car is much more likely to be diverted than an officer jumping in a vehicle at the cop shop.

I think the police withdrew from this service some years ago. Personally I’d be happier with a bunch of heavies sorting it out

Ripped off? Less than £1.50 a day for the security of knowing the system is monitored 24/7 by ADT and that if two sensors are tripped the Police will attend within 10 minutes - that is extraordinary value to me.

No, the Police still monitor and attend. They are paid to do so through the subscription.

The problem is, burglars are not deterred by cameras or alarms, and when push comes to shove, that's what matters. There's no harm installing all of this but as previously mentioned, dogs are a better answer.
